Curved (tooth) files are made from alloy steel and have teeth which are undercut resulting in faster cutting with less effort. They may be used on all materials from aluminium to hardest steel without clogging. The undercut and generous radius at the root of the teeth enables the file to clear itself whilst in use. Interesting tool
I read about dreadnought files in an old woodworking book - just the name, no description. I wanted to get a look at one but there were none to be found at my local home center. Didn't see any at the local Woodcraft or my usual online woodworking stores. I tried Amazon and found what I was looking for. The product was shipped from the UK so delivery took a bit longer than most other Amazon orders. That was expected. The file arrived in good shape and exactly as described. It's basically a flat file with very large, sharp teeth, like those on a plane maker's float. I tried it out on some soft pine. It removes a lot of wood but leaves a smooth finish. I found it's important to move the file straight back and forth. Holding it at an angle relative to the files's direction leaves prominent tooth marks. No problem - another straight pass removes them. I'm satisfied with this product and I look forward to exploring its uses in my woodworking hobby.
