No. But it has sound effects as you connect the chin to the rest of the mask, and then when connecting the dome you get that final hiss followed by the breathing noise.

The only sound effect is the breathing sound. It does not speak nor in french or english, just an international breathing sound.

Q: How do you fit the batteries as can see the compartment as I think the darth vader mask comes apart at the side and what's the separate plastic part ?

Batteries go in the collar. You unscrew the collar at the back and there is a battery compartment therefor 2 AAA batteries.
