From Petal to Pattern: Design your own floral patterns. Draw on nature.

Lovely little book

As another review has said - this book will not teach you how to draw flowers or plants, so if that is what you are after you will need to look elsewhere.What this book will introduce you to is how to create patterns using botanical and floral motifs in a variety of styles. It goes into great detail but the text is easy to follow and is illustrated throughout with examples and step-by-step methods.The first half of the book covers the BASICS - different forms of pattern, different layouts, repeating patterns, how to create a layout both working by hand and digitally, inspiration and colour theory. For digital work the book references Photoshop and Illustrator. I'm currently learning to use Affinity Designer (which allows you to create vector artwork). Although specific keyboard/mouse steps will not be the same, I think the digital methods the author uses will be transferable with a little tweaking.The second half of the book introduces you to various projects - using different forms of inspiration (seasons, ditsy, holiday floral, geometric, single flowers etc.). The author walks you through various techniques in a project and each project ends with the instruction to Create Your Own and you are given different "stepping off point" suggestions.The book concludes with a Botanical Index (very useful and something you could expand to include plants which specifically interest yourself); a few botanical facts and some further reading suggestions.If I had any niggles it would only be that I would have liked to have seen a more extreme palette used at places in the book. There is a lot of pink. Don't let that put you off because there is nothing preventing you from taking the lessons learned here and applying them to the wackiest colours you can think of.Overall - I highly recommend the book to anyone with an interest in floral art, patterning and design. It's detailed but easy to follow and inspiring. You could apply the methods you learn in this book to - designs using animals, geometric designs, technological designs etc.

This book is a great source of inspiration.As this breathtaking manual on the skilful creation of flower designs.The instructions of the book walk me through the steps of the peaceful art of drawing even though I have no experience in this field, and I just would like to create a relaxing atmosphere around myself by using these motives.The book is a great source for learning facts about the flowers, about myself through self-expression, and about the secret of the beauty of nature.I simple love it ;)

This book is our Daughters favourite book at the minute. She is 11 years old and is Autistic so the importance of perfect drawings is everything to her and learning how to draw petals and patterns with this book, well it keeps her happy and busy for hours and hours.It is a lovely book on how to draw floral patterns and is brilliant for educational purposes within art and design.

I have never empathised with an author so much. Their intro really hit me in a personal way, very honest, very authentic. I was hooked immediately.Then once you get to the bones of the book, they describe pattern and colour theory very well and easily digestible. It does focus a lot on digital art and specifically Adobe references. Which is nice, but I don't have Adobe illustrator. So those chunks become a little irrelevant (but only as I'm too cheap to pay for it, I would LOVE to afford the Adobe suite)Their patterns are beautiful, really aestically pleasing book. Such a tactile feel to it all too. Really interesting, personable and well thought out learning aid.Can't praise it enough. Really enjoyed it. Now...off to make some patterns!

This is a well structured book that provides really useful information on floral pattern creation.It covers theory concepts well and then brings to life how you can design your own creative projects and design your own unique patterns. It covers aspects of hand and digital and the book is illustrated beautifully and is very inspiring.I really like how the author brings in concepts of mindful affirmations, the connection we have with nature and bringing to life the meditative practice of drawing. It does well to inspire and then teach how you can achieve create something unique.

A beautifully written and informative book which explores floral pattern creation and colour schemes.It’s full of beautiful patterns and different, step by step techniques, showing how to create them both by hand and using software.My daughter is very much in to art and design and is loving using the floral index and taking inspiration for her drawings.A beautiful book which would make a lovely gift for artists or designers.Would recommend!

Incredibly detailed book on how to make your own patterns.This is a truly well-thought book to open your already creative mind toward a more practical one, or in other words how to get simple draws and transform them into beautiful and elegant patterns that you can use in any type of material.*but be aware that it does not make you a designer, an artist or even on how to draw a flower or even a simple petal.

This book has a good structure with several step by step guides on how to create pattern for both digital and traditional options.Part of the book is "project" section with different patterns design categories ( I think it's a good refresher and can be an inspiration for professionals as well). It has category characteristic , examples and short "how to" section.Book doesn't teach you how to draw - this is all about building pattern in different styles and composition from your drawing.I found this book practical and educational. If you need base from where to start - this book is for you.

Livro bem completo, várias técnicas, muitos exemplos e ilustrações. Recomendo para iniciantes e designers mais experientes também! As estampas são lindas!

Sigo a la autora hace tiempo y el libro no defrauda. Diseños preciosos y una fuente muy buena de inspiración.

Ansprechend gestaltetes Buch, voller Inhalt, Mehrwert, schöner Beispiele, angenehm getextet. Ich liebe es einfach und nehme es gern in die Hand. Obwohl ich selbst einen völlig anderen Stil habe (weniger blumig ;), mag ich ihre Floral Patterns sehr. Es könnte ruhig weitere Bücher von dieser Autorin geben. Als Patterndesignerin kann ich nicht genug Inspiration tanken und natürlich genieße ich auch einfach nur die schönen Patterns. :) Fazit: empfehlenswert.
