Generally. USB cables are backwards compatible. I'm using this cable between a WD Element external drive that is 3.0. As long as the connectors match, you should be good.

Yes, it is a tight fit, but it works.

Q: the usbc does not seem to fit into a macbook air. the port works with other cables. but it only goes partly in and the hard drive is not recognized—?

It has a tight fit, push it in further. Mine works fine with the MB Air.

Q: Will this cable work with a seagate 8tb expansion desktop external backup?

I used this cable for my laptop which has a different connection My desktop had a usb connection this one only worked for my laptop
