Do the medium guage have ball ends on the strings.?

Actually a tiny ring. Works the same. On my acoustic, I just push it down a hole behind the bridge and a peg holds it in place. I've been using Ernie Ball strings since the 70's and they have always been like this.

Any guitar strings will be OK for length but you need to decide the gauge yourself - depends on how you tune it. Start with a wound "D", a wound "G" and a plain "B" or "E". Buy these separate rather than sets. If you don't know how to tune it - Google or listen to Joni Mitchell's "Blue" and Fairport Convention "Unhalfbricking" has a track with featured dulcimer.
