This book is really great for beginners and helps you understand all the basics and how to get from a skeleton to a full letter form. Would recommend for a beginner and intermediate letterers!

Good book for beginners

This book was instructive and, as a hand lettering beginner, I found it easy to follow. The provided practice pages are helpful too!

I recently developed an interest in hand lettering and didn't know where to start. This book has a little bit of everything you need to get you started. There's an entire chapter dedicated to instructing you on how to draw letters, both uppercase and lowercase, in the serif and script style. There is also room to practice in the book, but not a lot a whole lot of practice pages to the point of excess (which is fine, I have my own paper to practice on). There are also some helpful tips on structuring your work so that you can create a beautiful piece of your own. The author covers lettering styles (serif,sans-serif,script,ornate,dimensional, blackletter, illustrative, chalk lettering, and drop cap), and gives beautiful examples of each, as well as an explanation of her process through text and diagrams.My favorite part of this book has to be the final chapter, explore and create, in which the author shows you how you can add swashes and filigree, shadows, different kinds of crossbars, manipulate apexes and vertices, different ways to style your serifs, and drawing letters on a slanted/wavy/curved path. There's more than enough material crammed into this book to inspire you to produce your own work of art.I hope this review was helpful. I tried to cover everything I wanted to know about the book before I bought it, but couldn't really find. I bought it on a whim, not really knowing whether or not it was what I was looking for. It turned out to be exactly what I'd hoped it would be.

Very good book but would have liked to have seen different alphabets with Upper and lower case Letters.
