what is the grit of the rod?

they don't give info on a # grit. Guessing, I'd say coarser than 400. It is by far the best rod type sharpener I've ever had.

Grip the knife by the handle with all fingers behind the heel. For a multi-stage sharpener, begin with the coarse slot (assuming the knife needs more than just a touch-up or honing). Insert the knife into the slot closest to the heel. Pull the knife smoothly through the slot towards yourself, exerting slight pressure. Lift the handle as you approach the tip to follow the contour of the blade. Each pull should only be 1 or 2 seconds. Repeat steps 6 & 7 until a burr is raised along the edge of the blade. Move to the fine grit slot and repeat steps 6 & 7 until the blade is smooth. Clean the blade with mild soap and water and wipe dry to remove any residual metal filings.

Can this be used for ceramic knives or just for normal steel/metal knives?

It can only be used for steel knives!!! For ceramic knives you need a diamond sharpening stick, as diamonds are the only substance harder than industrial ceramic!

It's the actual ceramic, sharpening, section! The black handle is 4".
