Product Description A semi-sequel to Disney's 1940 classic 'Fantasia' which features the original film's most famous sequence - the Mickey Mouse adventure 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' - plus seven other all-new animated interpretations of classical music. Highlights include the interwoven stories of a group of 1930s New Yorkers accompanied by Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue', the volcanic eruptions which illustrate Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite', and the story of Noah, his ark, and his assistant Donald Duck, played out to the strains of Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance'. desertcart.co.uk Review More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones, and others. --Mark EnglehartNote: Please be informed that the artwork on the DVD casing may differ, 'Classic 38' version is subjected to the availability of stock however both the product content are same. Review: Fantasia 2000 D.V.D. - Lovely, not quite up to the same standard as the original, I found the introduction by various people (celebs), distracting and did not enhance the program at all, I did enjoy the enhanced version of the original Sorcerer's Apprentice excellent, neverthelessless I am glad I bought it. Olivia R Review: Fantasia 2000 - worth getting. - As good as Fantasia. Even included a repeat of 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'. Some new musical adaptions, I particularly liked 'Pomp and Circumstance' with Donald Duck - every bit as good as 'The Dance of the Hours' on Fantasia. I would recommend it.

Intorduction to classical music for children.
I remember seeing Fantasia many years ago and enjoyed it. It is a good way of remembering classical music. In fact I can see the animation in my mind when I listen to certain pieces. I think it would be an introduction to classical music for children. The reproduction is good and goes well with the second DVD of Fantasia

but if you like classical music and the conducting craft of Stokowsky
This Disney vehicle may not be to everyone's taste, but if you like classical music and the conducting craft of Stokowsky, it's a must. I particularly liked the Mickey Mouse version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". I just hope that it reaches out to today's youngsters as much as Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf".

I thought this was going to be a reformatted version of the original.. I was disappointed when it started as I had been looking forward to the dancing hippos... as I watched I did become entranced with the new version! I did need to adjust my computer in order to play the DVD... I live in Canada and that was not a choice in the drop menu so I picked Denmark and it played.

When I went to purchase this DVD, Amazon directed me to someone selling a copy through them. I had no problem with this, as I've done this many times before. NOWHERE in Amazon or the seller's description did it say it was a Region 2 (it says it now!). I would not have bought this DVD if I had known this because I am in the U.S. and my DVD player does not support Region 2 DVDs. My suggestion, take the extra time to try and contact a seller first and make sure you're getting what works for you.
