Having never operated a drone of any kind before (and not a gamer), I have a steep learning curve to deal with to operate this little guy with any precision. After first charging the drone and putting batteries into the controller, both the drone and the controller started right up. I established contact between them and the light on the drone stopped flashing and became steady green. First time flying, I didn't notice any "obstacle avoidance," although when I moved my hand (or head) near the drone while in flight, it did move away. Meanwhile, owing to my inexperience, it knocked into lots of things in my somewhat cluttered living room. Unless you have something extremely light or fragile, it's not likely to harm anything, no even itself. Not being a gamer, I'm not accustomed to using a joy-stick controller and tend to be less than subtle in steering, height adjustment, and so on. However, my impression is that the joy-stick controllers could be a little more responsive. I'm happy to say that this drone does not make the obnoxious noise that some do. Although I can't tell how the propellers might get damaged, I appreciate the inclusion of spare propellers...who knows? This is indeed a fun toy for any age, especially for those who are used to game or remote-control joy-stick devices. Having said all this, I do not have anything to compare to this drone.

This novelty drone is super fun and easy to operate. It is gesture operated, which adds a great amount of novelty, movement, and activity, which is great for an older kid to get up and moving playing with it. It also "avoids" obstacles pretty well, which is great too. It took some figuring out to figure out the gestures and motions, and there is SO much STEM learning going on behind the scenes while an older child plays with this - trial and error, cause and effect, physics, engineering, etc. Great activity and fun outdoor toy on a nice day.
