Great after a tune up.. Better than a vintage Stanley!
I bought one of these about 5 months ago when I was planning on getting into woodworking.I have been using it now for a bout 2 months, and while it worked OK when I got it first, I've been gradually tweaking, and improving it, filing down bits, flattening the blade, smoothening the sole, and the base, and making sure the blade is sitting flush on it, etc, and it's working great now.I usually buy vintage old tools, instead of new ones, and clean them up, like old planes, etc, but this was my only spokeshave until today, when my vintage Stanley spokeshave arrived. I cleaned it up, smoothened it and sharpened it, etc, expecting it to be better than this cheapo spokeshave, but it's not!I don't know what it is about this Silverline spokeshave, but it just feels more comfortable in the hand. Maybe it's that the metal in the handles are a bit thicker, I don't know, but it just feels better, more solid, and it seems to roll better in your palms and fingers when you guide it around a curve. The Stanley also still has some chetter, even though the blade is flat with the base, so it might work a bit better wghen I tweak it some more, but for now, bizarrely, this cheap one works better!Maybe it's that I'm just more used to using this spokeshave, I don't know, only time will tell, but I think I'd definitely reach for this before the Stanley. I'm sure the parts in this are a bit cheaper than those on the Stanley, and I'm not betting that it will last 100 years, like the Stanley, but if you're willing to put the work into tweaking this yourself, to get it perfect, then it's definitely recommended. If you just want something to use every now and again, and you're not bothered about it working absolutely perfect, then it's also recommended.I'm sure the manufacturing is not as stringent on these cheap spokeshaves, so you might get unlucky and end up with something that's broken, or with dodgy threads or something, but you can always get a refund if that's the case.If you want something that's perfect straight out of the box, then you should probably look at a Veritas or something expensive where somebody spends an hour tuning it up perfectly for you before it leaves the factory, but even then it might be perfect, but it might not be perfect for you.

Broke on 2nd use and no response from seller
I bought a Flat Spoke Shave 250mm (598427) and was initially very happy with the product. It seemed sturdy and had a bit of weight to it. It wasn't as sharp as I would have liked, but that seems quite normal with planes and chisels, so I just sharpened it. It worked beautifully the 1st time I used it. However, on the second use it broke!Basically, the thread seems to have gone on either the cap screw/locking screw or the cap iron (I think its the latter), and the screw won't stay in, nor can it be used to adjust the spoke shave.Obviously, I'm very disappointed that it broke so quickly, despite claiming to be "guaranteed forever" on the box! In reality I wouldn't expect it to last forever, but to break on its second outing is a bit too much!I followed the advice on Amazon and wrote to the seller including a photo of the broken device, asking for either a replacement (as I'm happy to give it the benefit of the doubt) or a replacement. Its now been nearly 3 weeks and disappointingly I still haven't had a response. I had also ordered a Silverline 633465 Hand Plane No. 4 through Amazon, but have since cancelled that order due to the lack of response from the seller.I understand that sometimes items are damaged in the manufacturing process and this can't be helped. As such I was willing to give the seller the opportunity to rectify the situation (hence waiting 3 weeks before writing a review). I have also bought other Silverline tools in the past and have been very happy with them. Unfortunately, its the lack of customer service that I have the biggest issue with, and so my low rating is both for the product itself and the customer support.

Not bad for the cost
Seems good for the money. Easy to adjust and stays as set. Will have to see how it lasts. Finishing of device is a bit rough but as long as it does the job.

Check the blade!
Not knowing much about spoke shaves, I used this straight out of the packet until I realised the blade had been fitted upside-down. It then required quite a bit of sharpening to get working, and still sits at an odd angle. The blade holder also comes undone during use. Still, good for a first foray into spoke shaving - "buy cheap, then buy good." This is the cheap.

Good stuff
Nice! I bought a pair of these bad boys, one straight and one convex. I've never used one before but have a little project on the go that I thought they could help with.Very easy to use, very easy to set up and did exactly what I hoped they would do.When you're paying a fiver for a tool that can cost £100 or more there's really no room to moan. I went for the dirt cheap option because it was my first time and I wasn't totally convinced they wpuld help. I'll use them until they die or until I have enough experience to know that they're not quite up to snuff, in the meantime it's two thumbs up from me. A fabulous starter tool for the inexperienced user.

Don't expect much for the money
Yep it's cheap but needed to be sharpened and set up properly

Seems to be adequate for a hobbyist, some preparation of the spokeshave is required before it's useable.
Item arrived in a mail bag as the original packaging was torn open (looked deliberate).Blade is blunt, but didn't take long to sharpen after a pass on a grinding wheel. Not sure of edge durability as I've only used it a little, but it seems to be holding okay. The tightening screw were a solid fit and initial tightening took a burr off the rim of the nuts so I took them off and ground the edges a little rounder to prevent the burr from reappearing. For the price this item is perfectly adequate, although more for a hobbyist than a pro.
