Would these be ok for my 9 1/2 week old chihuahua

These are very hard my pug has had his for over a year and he constantly goes to it but has only made scratches on it so far I would say no for your dog get a softer version of this bone not the tough one they do one for puppies

Are these really hard or are they the squidgier type?

They are the hard type ones, I have 2 small dogs one is a jug with a super small mouth the other a patterdale and they love them. Good if your dog is a chewer

Is it safe for the dog to eat the small pieces she bites off?

"Nylabone have been mastering making chew toys for over 50 years and have a manufacturing process like no other, Nylabone make sure they do not splinter, instead the nice smooth surface 'roughs up' as it is chewed and tiny bristles raise on the bone, acting like a mini toothbrush which will help keep your dogs' teeth clean and prevent tartar build up. If your dog does manage to bite any off it should only ever be as small as a grain of rice and these can be passed if swallowed, they are not a choking hazard. It is important to select the appropriate chew type, size, and formulation based on your dog's age, breed, chewing style, and weight. The pressure exerted by a strong chewer's jaw is considerable, and when directed straight down can put tremendous (as much as 450 psi) stress on the dog's teeth. It is therefore recommended that non-edible chews be large enough to encourage chewing from the side rather than the top and bottom. If you have more than one dog in your household, select chews appropriate for the largest, strongest chewer. Replace when knuckle ends are worn down, or if it becomes too small for your dog to chew safely." My personal view: We did buy them a few times but found the chewed ends do feel quite sharp and might make your dogs mouth sore. We much prefer giving ours stag antlers now, our dogs teeth are much cleaner and they last for ages. Get the proper antler pointed shaped ones though - our two got through a wide flat type in no time at all and are a waste of money.

When should you throw these out?

We throw ours out when they start chewing & eating little pieces off. If your dog doesn't do that then I'd suggest throwing them out when they get too small for them to use safely.

Great for hardcore chewers but may damage your flooring

I have two border collies who love to chew, they love these chews and they last for agggeeesss!! Only downside is that they are very hard and heavy, when the dogs drop them on the flooring , it’s loud, it could potentially damage some types of flooring.

I would recommend

I love Nylabone! My puppy (8 months) does too and that’s probably more important. This was a different flavour to her other toys and she seemed to like it. She is quite a powerful chewer for a small dog and really loves to chew so this bone with the different textures really keeps her occupied. It’s a medium size which is perfect for our puppy and it’s really easy to clean off in the sink. I keep an eye on my puppy with her chews and she isn’t allowed any new toy without constant supervision until I’m sure it’s as safe as can be for her. This bone has lasted weeks already and is still going so I would say it is pretty safe. It’s checked everyday and you can tell she’s been chewing on it but no chunks have come out so I am happy with this. A safe, reliable chew that keeps her entertained is definitely worth the price in my mind so I would definitely recommend this bone.

Great chew

I brought this for my very destructive puppy..so far so good..can’t even see teeth marks when he’s chewed on it..should last awhile..good value for money
