These things are built like tanks
I have been using these IOSafe backups for about 5 years. They have their flaws, but for me, they have been consistent performers. They are perfect for protecting files at home or on an irregular basis. Meaning... this isn't a great drive for daily use. It just isn't fast enough if you are continually moving files on-and-off the drive. It works, but for that, I want something much faster.I use the IOSafe drive as a "safety deposit box" for important files. These are files (like old photos, pictures, tax returns) that I absolutely want to be protected, but I mainly wanted them stored someplace safe.Notes-- First ... at the present time this IOSafe drive is a great value. You can buy portable SSD drives cheaper (and they will likely be faster) but for mass backup in a protected source.. this is hard to beat.- Built like a tank. These drives are seriously very heavy. They are so heavy that you will need to consider where you are going to store them. If you are not careful, the drive is heavy enough to warp a thin desk.- I have mentioned it a few times, but the drives are not very fast. Expect a transfer rate to mas at about 90m/s- I have never had an issue of mounting one of these drives. I have external hard drives (or any kind of peripheral) that doesn't mount properly. I have never tried them with a Mac, but they work great with a PC.- I have never had an issue with missing or damaged files (knock on wood).Final verdict - I wouldn't use these as some type of file server, but for protecting important files these IoSafe hard drives are hard to beat!

Be safe with ioSafe; your data will thank you.
GREAT PURCHASE AND SUPPORT. I decided to order this drive after reading a positive review where the author proved that it could survive cooking in a gas grill and submersion in water - and still have the drive data recovered, as advertised. After looking at different models, this (SK4TB) 4 terabyte version appealed to me as the best value and highly rated. The pre-sales technical response to my email was most prompt and helpful, confirming that the drive could be placed on its side, thus fitting nicely on my lower shelf. Later I realized that their thorough FAQ also answered this. The drive arrived beautifully packaged and worked perfectly. It features the latest and greatest 4096 bytes/sector standard, which universally causes conflicts when trying to "clone" an old 512 bytes/sector drive onto a partition on these new drives. Note that normal disk operation is always accommodated with no complications. Again, their support staff came through with two possible solutions, and their recommended alternative clone technique worked great. I feel that ioSafe data is much more secure and private than one of those cloud-storage services that often provide celebrity photos to the Internet. The padlock loop also provides optional protection against theft. What's not to like?!?!

The best in backup protection... here's why I say this
I've used Iosafe backup yard drives for many years now. Thankfully I have never had a disaster (fire or flood), but having an Iosafe would be, in that circumstance, an incredible relief. Having a backup on another drive is only have of a solution, having it on one that can resist fire, or an even more likely danger, water, is paramount. The quality, packaging, instructions, accessories (cables, power supplies, adapters) is first-class. The USB 3.0 speed writes very quickly when I import my files from Lightroom into the connected Iosafe. It's worth mentioning that I am a professional wedding photographer and Iosafe is the only brand I trust for this primary backup function. They are one company whose products truly standout as not only one-of-a-kind, but as the best in the business. Highly recommended.

MAC OWNERS: Please read this before trying to initialize your ioSafe!! Apple made a mistake!!
I was wrong! At first, I thought ioSafe had screwed me! After their prompt response, they showed me it was APPLE'S fault!!Buyer beware! If you are Mac owner and you choose to buy this unit, the latest Apple OS 10.13.3 Mac OS High Sierra doesn't show the proper listings of devices in their application "DISK UTILITY."To wit, when you go to DISK UTILITY, in the upper left-hand corner is an icon labeled, "View". When you bring down that menu, "Show Only Volumes" is selected. (Photo #1)THIS IS WRONG!!!Select "SHOW ALL DEVICES" (Photo #2). Select the upper-level icon of your device and DISK UTILITY will work properly.

Great HD
I have had the ioSafe for over six months and it is a work horse. Very reliable and it looks great - very streamlined. It's fireproof and waterproof..two of the features I hope I never have to test. I'm glad to know my information is protected. My iMac recognized it as soon as I plugged it in and it is silent - no clicking or grinding sounds. I have used Seagate and WD HD in the past and I have always had problems with them with in a year. After reading the reviews on the ioSafe, I was ready to give it a try and I'm glad I did.

Good, but EXPENSIVE
The unit arrived in good condition. It seems to be well-built and capable of meeting the manufacturer's claims. The unit powered up, mounted correctly, and was recognized by the computer over the local network. In summation, it seems to be working as advertised. The battleship gray color is unattractive, but most people won't care. The only two real issues are - one: the unit is prohibitively expensive; and two: it also should have provided an eSATA connection, especially for the price. For this reason, I didn't give it five stars.

It's a big disk that holds lots of backups
It works exactly as expected--you plug it in via USB, and you can save backups to it. Incidentally, I am using this with a Linux system and there are no problems at all. I don't understand the difference between this and the "business class" version that costs twice as much. This is perfect for a backup solution for me.

Image does not match the product
Just bought this thing in Canada. This box is the new version and the image in the add is the old version... Looks like they went back in time in my mind when looking at it. Seller was good and got back to me quickly.

Very robust.
I use this, along with an earlier purchase, for backing up irreplaceable recordings of endangered languages and related materials. It is very robust and easy to use.
