Is it better to use this as a standalone router or access point? how does to compare to tp link routers?

Stand alone. I wouldn't bother going with this if all you want is a WAP. This is your powerful RouterOS MikroTik with WiFi6. TP-Link is your standard over the counter router, and you'll probably get comparable wifi performance depending on the model. But you won't get the control, security, and function that you get with a MikroTik. MikroTik gives you contol over even the frames if you want it. Not to mention, TP-Link is like the Ford Taurus. MikroTik is like buying a Humvee with all the options. It's the swiss army knife of routers.

Very nice pro router, Winbox management app best management interface (and i'm a senior network engineer) + WEB and hierarchical CLI. This is a real swiss army knife with all functions and protocol you can imagine and then some. Unbeatable for the price, punch way above anything below 1000$ and even more. I’m using the MikroTik hAP ax2 as my main router together with a few other non-MikroTik devices as access points, and the difference is clear. The router processes requests much faster, so I see a real speed boost compared to my old setup. Stable, reliable, and packed with features — an excellent choice for home or small office!

Awesome router, especially for the price. Works great on for 1 Gbps links. I have 3 that I use for home use (each one installed in a different city), but with 3 x site-2-site VPNs, remote access, highly customized firewall, etc. It's really a beast for the size and price.
