Like The Cap But Not The Blue Plastic Smell.
I have used these while riding my bike for some years now. The tab on the cap is rather fragile and tends to break off after awhile. I put up with this to be able to grab a clean drink while I'm riding since the tab lets me flip the cap open with one hand so I don't need to stop. (The cap does a great job keeping the dust off the spout since the bottles are mounted within my reach on the bike frame but near the dust from the front tire.) I recently bought a couple new bottles to replace ones with broken tabs. These new ones came with blue tinted plastic bottles. After riding for a few hours in some hot weather the plastic picked up an odor that affected the taste of the water. I especially noticed this odor when I got home and washed out the bottles. The odor did seem to go away after letting them soak overnight with a mixture of water and baking soda. I guess I'll just need to go back to my old clear plastic bottles but use the new caps.

Great customer service, but the cap needs a retaining cord
The last couple of months of mountain biking has been great. I've gone from being terrified to being able to do 2-3 foot drops and jumps. My gear, however, has gotten dirtier and dirtier: despite the "drought", it's been a relatively wet California winter, and I've done enough stream crossings and puddle crossings to soak my shoes right through multiple times. The usual mountain biking solution of using a hydration pack just doesn't work for me at all. I hate having anything on my back for a bike ride, and philosophically, I've always thought that it's crazy to carry something on your body when it can be carried on the bike. The Nalgene ATB bottle comes with a cap that closes over the drinking nozzle. You'll probably be surprised to find out that I've done extensive searches but this is the only water bottle that seems designed to keep your drinking nozzle free from dirt, mud, and horse poop. None of the other bottles that are similarly protected will fit into a standard water bottle cage. What's more important, the cap is easily flipped open and drunk from while riding, and then closed back up. I was using that feature one day when I pushed the cap in the wrong direction, and pop, off went the cap and it disappeared from the trail without a trace!I can't complain about Nalgene's customer support though! I sent them an e-mail, and a new cap is now on its way. While I think that some sort of retaining cord should be designed into this bottle, the fact that it's the only one available that fits my need means pretty much that I'll keep using it, and be more careful about the cap next time.Recommended!

Served its purpose
I wanted a water bottle with cover for the mouth piece while riding my bike. This works for that purpose. Fits well in water bottle rack on my bike. Easy to pull out and return to rack while I'm on the bike. I keep the mouth piece cover loose instead of snapping shut and the spout pulled out while I'm riding. I did have the mouth piece cover pop off after hitting it on my bike frame. The cover hit the road. Took a few minutes but easily popped back into place and did not break.

Good bike bottles
My wife and I are both using these. We like them particularly for the cap that keeps dirt off the mouth parts. We've used these for a couple of seasons and they are holding up well. We wash them in the dishwasher. Never noticed any plastic taste or odor. The cap hinge and clasp are not hugely rugged. We haven't had any issues, but a hard knock in the wrong place would obviously cause damage. If you want a really rugged bottle, with a cap, try the 750ml Laken Fit. The downsides to the Laken are much higher price, clumsier spout opening and not likely to be dishwasher safe (aluminum), but you would probably have to use a hammer to damage it.Is it BPA free? The Nalgene web site, (as of 7/14/13) says it is. They say the bottle body is made of LDPE. LDPE is not made from and normally does not contain BPA or BPA derived ingredients. Nalgene says the mud cap, the clear part on top, is made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is, almost always, made from BPA, and there is evidence small amounts of BPA can leach out of some grades of polycarbonate. The black and white portions of the cap are not identified. To this chemist who has worked with many plastics, the black part seems unlikely to be made from polycarbonate or any other BPA containing plastic. The black part is more likely HDPE or polypropylene. I can't tell about the white part of the cap. It is rigid enough that it could be polycarbonate, but other materials are possible, too.

Perfect for Toddlers
I needed a water bottle with an attached cap for my 3 year old when we go to the beach. I hunted around for a long time to find one, but all I could locate were bottles with an "open mouth" design (which would only result in my kid pouring his water all over himself or the ground); all the "sippy" bottles I found didn't have attached caps (so there'd be sand all over the mouthpiece five minutes after we park the car). This bottle though, is perfect. Yes, it's meant for bikes, not toddlers, but my toddler quickly learned to pull the whole mouthpiece up to get the water out, and the design of the mouthpiece means my kid will actually drink his water rather than spill it, the plastic is strong enough to stand up to his attempts to squeeze the water out, and the cap is attached (bonus - when the cap is closed the bottle is sealed and doesn't leak all over the place). If you need a bottle for your toddler or little kid that can travel in your bag without leaking, or for outdoor sports or vacations where dirt or sand will be an issue, this is absolutely the best best out there.

Great for dusty rides
I bought these because I got tired of the grit in my teeth after each drink on my local trails. It is dry and dusty here. The cap keeps most of the dust/dirt out but it is not sealed so not all of it. Enough that my teeth no longer feel like I just put sandpaper in there. The bottle and top are good, the plastic cap is a little fragile if you torque it off to the side. I cracked one top after a full bottle drop onto the lid. Just took the cover off and use the bottle on the trainer now. I will buy more when these get retired

Great for artic environments, well designed
Excellent functional design for use in frozen environments. Many Nalgene bottles are impractical for use in extreme cold weather environments and have wide-mouth openings. First problem with these wide-mouth bottles is that you have to stop every time you want a drink and the second problem is that you risk spilling water down the front of you if you are not careful; get wet in extreme cold is not ideal. These bottles however can be used while walking and are easily operated with heavy gloves on to remove the outer cover (protects drinking surfaces from getting dirty if dropped onto muddy surface). Once cover is lifted, the lip on the drinking spout can be pulled to the open position with your teeth, precluding the need to touch drinking spout with filthy hands. I used (2) these Nalgene bottles on New Year's Day to trek up Ben Nevis and temperatures were extreme by the time I reached summit: -17F, winds of 50-70 MPH. One bottle was carried in a case on my rucksack waistband and the other strapped to outside of my rucksack and fully exposed to the environment. After about 4.5 hours, when I went to use bottle strapped to my rucksack it was maybe 30% frozen, but I still had drinkable water. By squeezing it, I was able to break the ice up and continue drinking on way down. Normal sports water bottles would have been frozen solid under these conditions and left me with no drinkable water. BTW, water tastes lovely from these bottles and lacks that crappy, plasticy taste that you get from many non-Nalgene bottles. Worth the premium you pay fro Nalgene.

Nice bottle, brittle lid hinge
I got this bottle for my road bike as in the variable British weather and country lanes there's quite a lot of muck which ends up on the nozzle, even with mudguards.First, the taste is good and a lot less plasticky than some other bottles. I've put it through the dishwasher (without the lid) and it seemed to clean up nicely. It is comfortable to hold and squeeze. The hard nozzle clicks positively in and out and closes when the clear domed cap is folded over. There's a bit of a knack to opening the cap one-handed, but it's not too bad. The cap certainly keeps the nozzle clean. The only downside is that the clear cap is made of quite brittle material and clumsy operation (while cycling) meant that it broke at the hinge.I still use the bottom without the lid, but it's a lot to pay for a bottle without the lid.

bad lid
Works great aside from the lid cap - I dropped the bottle from hip height (not even waist height!) within the first month of getting it, and the dome cap snapped off right at the hinge. I ended up super gluing it back together and it snapped again a few weeks later.Beyond that, it's great. I don't really need the cap anyway.

Tolle Flasche
