I loved this book and was very in detail and inspiring. I liked how her and her sister were always fighting but as they got older they made up and became great friends

Fascinating woman; fascinating story
Florence Nightingale, "the lady with the lamp," was instrumental in developing nursing as a profession in 1850s-1900 England. Reef's story begins with Nightingale's privileged childhood, and her struggle to find a meaningful use of her time in an age where women generally married young and were expected to find fulfillment as wives and mothers. Nightingale felt called to care for the sick from an early age, and throughout her life had a faith that God was guiding her. Nightingale's father allowed her to study algebra (reluctantly) and she used travel opportunities to observe the often pitiful conditions of European hospitals.Nightingale comes into her own as about midway through the story, and those wanting to read more about battlefield wounds and pestilent hospital conditions will find plenty of interest. The tone of the book turns more towards the medical, and Nightingale meets with Elizabeth Blackwell and others, and begins her work of establishing nursing guidelines and seeking to make hospitals places for care and healing, rather places to crowd injured and sick people until many of them died.Reef is a gifted writer, and FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE: THE COURAGEOUS LIFE OF THE LEGENDARY NURSE will hold the interest of anyone who is already even mildly interested in her life. I enjoyed this book as an adult reader, though I am not sure it will immediately grab the middle school audience. That doesn't mean that I won't offer both FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, and Jim Murphy's excellent BREAKTHROUGH: HOW THREE PEOPLE SAVED BLUE BABIES to middle school readers who shows even the slightest interest in reading about smart, ground-breaking people in the medical field.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got his book: review copy from the publisher

Florence Nightingale
I am not thrilled with this book. It is not holding my attention and I am an avid reader. It seems to skip around and is not like a typical biography. Perhaps when I get past the first 50 pages it will be better.
