English 3200 with Writing Applications: A Programmed Course in Grammar and Usage

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn and acquire the skills that will enable a person to write clearly and effectively. The goal of the author is to impart knowledge that helps to identity the components of good sentence structure and how to express ideas clearly through techniques found in this book.Like any programmed instruction book, this one uses frames and follows the pattern of giving a little piece of information which requires a response from the reader. Response is reinforced immediately by turning to the next page and seeing if the response is correct or incorrect.There are about 40 frames for each lesson. What I like about this approach is that I can set a goal and reach it. At the end of each lesson I have learned something new; each lesson enables me to express more clearly what I want to say. Also, if I need to review a particular lesson or part of speech, I can look it up in the index, discover on what page it begins, and then work through that lesson again. (Sometimes a person may miss a significant definition which may not sink in until one goes through the lesson again.)Programmed instruction is a great way to learn, and English lends itself particularly well to this technology of teaching. Writing is a tool, and like any tool such as a keyboard, mouse, or calculator, one needs to learn how to use the tool before it benefits you or anyone else. Working through this book is similar to learning how to use a tool; the tool itself is "complete thoughts expressed through writing". English 3200 is a medium through which you can learn how to clearly express your thoughts so that others may easily understand your message. I highly recommend it to everyone.

This is the best book on sentence structure ever. I wish I had this book when I was in school. I read alot of books on grammar and they never work for me. I usually forgot what I read after a day or two. I am an electrical engineer. Math and science are always my best subject while english is my worse.This book show me how to combine simple sentences into compound and complex sentence. How to add adverb and adjective clause into the sentence to make it more meaningful. It show you the same example in many different ways. It is like doing algebra.This book use a scientific approach. You will learn sentence structure and remember it for the rest of your life.

This is the best grammar resource I have ever found. I've been teaching grammar from it since 1998 to middle school, elementary, high, ESL, and college students. If you want to truly differentiate your classroom and allow students to move at their own speed, this is the book. It is a workbook containing 3200 grammar questions starting with the ridiculously easy and moving to very difficult all based on prior knowledge you gained in the earlier lessons. Because it is a workbook, buy it new or expect to have other people's answers written in it. Don't be put off by the way it is organized.

I got this textbook in college, and I went through it quickly. The format of the textbook is amazing. It lets you not only learn grammar rules, but how to apply them, and then repeatedly quizzes you to make sure you got the rule. I enjoyed learning this way. My husband has a better grasp of the English language than me and is a better writer, but he still comes to me to check his grammar, punctuation and spelling. I've lost the textbook a few years ago, but I'm buying it again for my husband so he does well on the GRE writing exams.

I remember having a version of this as a freshman in college, and it helped hone my grammar and punctuation. Really no need to mark it up. You can just read questions, answer in your mind or write response on a notepad and then check answer. Good for practice and review.

I wanted to get back on track with grammar. This book is the best one I have ever used. It teaches you everything you need to know in a way that is easy and helps you to remember what you have learned.

I bought the 2200 series first with the answer book with test and I passed them all with flying colors. So I decided to go for the 2600 and passed that as well with flying colors. After that I decided to buy this book and continue, however, I did not do so well with the test as I would've liked. This is still a great book and I only wish that I could write the author a positive review on it; but I think he might be deceased by now. I truly recommend this book, but you must buy the tests with answer key. Don't cheat!!!

I used this book 45 years ago in my senior year in high school. I still have it! I remember how much it helped prepare me for college and decided to get it for my grand daughter who is entering her senior year of high school. It is a great book and I just bet she will remember it when it comes time for her grand kids to go to college. If you really want to improve your writing skills, this is a great product you can use at home in your spare time.

The most phenomenal book on functional grammar.
