The definitive guide to Marillion.
The updated version of Separated Out is a great read & filled to the brim with all things Marillion. The new chapters provide real insight the band & what they've been up to since the .com album. Jon Collins has written the definitive guide to Marillion.

The history of one of the music industry's best kept secrets....`
Its OK. Its not a bad book and does contain quite a lot of info. The only thing that disappoints me slightly about it is the style of writing; having read books by Guy Pratt, Tony Visconti and others, whilst this in itself is not an autobiography, it comes across sometimes as more a collection of disjointed anecdotes that point to events but sometimes lack detail - almost just like a set of quotes. Certainly appears to be a difference between the recording of the Hogarth era (with less detail) than the Fish era, but on the whole, its a good book and I'm glad I got it. I just have the feeling that it could have been so much more.

Great for real fans
As a true Anorak I love reading all the ins and outs. If you like the band but do not own all of their albums you might not always understand what it is all about.

A good read although , the author should have taken a bit more time to look into the last decade of the band's history. Feels a bit rushed through. But deffo a recommendation.

Jon Collins did a wonderful job capturing the essence of a band not only from an author's perspective, but also as a keeper of the process. He discusses how the music was put together, what the tours were like and in many cases the meaning behind the lyrics. As I read this book, I found myself going back and listening to the cds with a new ear. I have no music background, so music is something that I simply like or do not like, or the lyrics tell a story I can relate to. Jon's work allows the reader (like me) to dig a little deeper and say, "I never noticed that before." I highly recommend this book for any Marillion fan, any fan of music.

I had been waiting on the reissue of the book for quite a while. Was very happy to learn at the Montreal convention that the book was available. others have opined that the author gushes a little too effusively. That is a fair point, however I tend to agree with his opinion. :-) As good a book as you're ever likely to read on the Marillos, if you're interested, this is your chance!
