Best Tester for the Price
I love this thing. After too many experiences troubleshooting phantom errors that were just the inevitable bad crimp job, I bought this. With this, you can run your CAT6 unterminated to get the perfect length, terminate one end and connect the slave tester. Cut the other end to length and terminate and then test. Depending on the specific error it gives you, you can reterminate or just give the crimper a tighter squeeze. If you're doing advanced stuff and a plain pass/fail will not do, it even tells you which pairs are off, cross, open, short, split.Explain to your company that this thing will pay for itself with the first bad connection that it catches (depending on your bill rate)It even does coax and comes with a bunch of dongles for easy hookup.Thoughts:You don't need the optional case, since this has clips, you'll just clip it to your bag and be done with it.I wish that it would test to see your top bandwidth over the line or something, but that's way pricey tech.It should come with the 568-A and 568-B diagrams printed on the unit somewhere, but doesn't. Make your own from a mailing label and stick it on.

Great for basic uses
This is not a fancy device, and it may be a little over priced. It comes with a battery too, so no need to purchase one. Dont use the line tracing ability, it is just a waste. By a tone generator and a probe, fluke works good and so does the fox and hound set. This piece is perfect for testing wire that your making BEFORE you run it. Great for short cables as you can easily see both ends. Longer runs...well you can see all the information on one display, but you absolutely MUST know that you have connected the other end to the proper cable. The screen is easy to understand, and it will even test your sheilding on the STP. If the lights are solid, your fine. If you see flashing, something was not right, so look at hte device closer to see which one. Pretty simple concept that can be used as a distance. The auto power off feature is a little annoying, you have five seconds or so to test.

This tool is a piece of garbage. I bought three of them and 2 have already failed. Amazon is good about replacement policy but it still costs money to ship it back for replacement. Avoid at all costs.

Not as good as it should be
The only things this tester is good for is if you KNOW you have a good ethernet cable, you can confirm it. And it will identify a SOLID failure of a line or pair within an ethernet cable. It is of no value in troubleshooting structured wiring, or a questionable cable (intermittent) crimp/end.I found a couple of things wrong with this item.1. You can't use it on live circuits or you will damage the devices connected to it. That means you HAVE TO KNOW FOR SURE what is on the other end of the wire, and that it is FOR SURE disconnected.2. It only tests cables when you power on. Thus if you have an intermittent cable end, and the unit shows the pair as"bad" with most testers, you can wiggle the questionable cable end (who knows which one) and the tester will then show the cable as either open shorted or good. With THIS tester, it only tests once upon power up. Thus if you wiggle a questionable end AFTER you power it on, it will NEVER show as good so you are guessing which end is bad.

A Bit Expensive But Works Really Well.
We purchased this lan tester to check a bunch of cable cuts from 1,000ft of cat5e cable. It detected several bad cuts of the cable where the actual bulk cable had factory defects. If it wasn't for this little cable tester we would have installed bad sections of these cables. The tool test individual pairs as well as the entire cable. The leds are bright enough to see but the writing with the black and orange is a bit difficult to see when the leds are on. This really isn't a big deal if you use the tester a few times you'll remember what the leds are for. The power saving feature is a bit of a pain since it shuts down the tester after a few seconds. It would have been perfect if you could have disabled this feature manually but then again it's really not a big problem either. We had a long cable run that kept giving us intermittent problems and we changed the cable twice and still got the same problems .. this tester helped us realized that our crimping tool was not doing a good job and needed to be replaced. It's a bit high priced in comparison to other testers but it does a really good job. We don't know how long the tool will last in terms of durability so we'll have to re-post here to let you know if and when it does fail.

If you're serious this is for you!
Like I said, if you're serious about your Ethernet cables, this is definitely the tool for you!I've used many other types of Ethernet testers and have concluded that this is close to the best on the market. For the price, it is top of the list. Just press the power button then the test button and just that quickly you know whether the cable is good or bad unlike those slow testers that step one at a time through each and every wire, if you look away for a second or blink you have to wait until it cycles through again. The others also will give you a false reading by the master showing that it steps through each wire showing good but the remote end will tell you that one or more of the lines is bad.The Paladin 1543 solves that problem, first, if even one of the eight wires is bad it tells you immediately that it fails the continuity check. Second, it shows you on both the main and remote which pair is open. Finally, if you are terminating the shield, it will check that at the same time for you. On top of all that, it checks coax cables too! This tester is well worth the money and if you don't abuse it, it will last you a lifetime. Paladin tools are quality products and worth every penny. If you are in the market for a LAN tester, I highly recommend the Paladin 1543.
