Lotus: Second Chance Love with Romantic Suspense Review: Beautifully Broken and Unforgettable – A Story of Trauma, Healing, and the Power of Love - Lotus by Jennifer Hartmann is one of those stories that quietly burrows into your heart and stays there. It’s tender, tragic, and deeply moving in all the ways I’ve come to love from her writing. The story follows Oliver, a boy who was abducted and held captive for over two decades—and Sydney, the girl who never stopped hoping he’d come home. When he finally returns to the world, broken but brave, the two reconnect in a way that’s equal parts painful and heartwarming. Their bond, once innocent and childlike, transforms into something powerful, slow-burning, and emotionally charged. Jennifer Hartmann has this incredible ability to write trauma with such care. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is romanticized. You feel the awkwardness, the pain, the confusion—and eventually, the hope. Oliver’s journey back to himself is handled so delicately, and Sydney is the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for: compassionate, loyal, and just as lost in her own way. What I loved: 🔹A slow, healing romance rooted in friendship and trust 🔹Deep trauma representation handled with grace and sensitivity 🔹Emotional depth that’ll have you crying, smiling, and everything in between 🔹Characters who feel real in their brokenness The message that healing isn’t linear—but love can light the way If you’re in the mood for a slow-burn romance that’s heavy on heart and healing, Lotus is an absolute must-read. It’s the kind of book that lingers long after the last page. Review: Heartbreakingly Beautiful Love Story. - I really enjoyed Oliver and Sydney’s story. Beyond it being heartbreakingly beautiful, it’s also full of mystery. I had an inkling in the beginning as to why Oliver was taken, but JH managed to throw me off quite a bit. I love trying to figure out the mystery aspects of a story, so being taken for a little ride was fun for me. I am so glad that I did. I fell head over heels for Oliver. Sweet sweet Oliver is just the best! He is so amazing and swoony! Oliver’s sweet innocence and honesty absolutely stole my heart! Swoon! The love these 2 share for each other shines through, as does their chemistry. It's a slight slow burn, but **wiggles eyebrows** It was done impeccably well. And the twist on what Lotus meant was a little mind blowing. I loved the meaning!! I was introduced to Sydney and Oliver in Still beating and June First, so I was intrigued to learn more about them. There were connections between all 3 books that were quite intriguing. This is a complete stand alone, but I love stories built in the same world. Brings more depth into the author's world. I will be jumping into more of JH’s books hoping to find more easter eggs and gold nuggets. Lotus took us on a mysterious journey with this story. Definitely has some triggers, so read the authors note. I highly recommend reading. I love a good JH story. While Lotus was seriously good, I was a little disappointed that my heart wasn’t completely smashed to pieces… but also extremely grateful LOL. FAVORITE QUOTES We are yards apart, separated by a pane of glass and twenty-two long years, but I feel something pass between us. A current. A frisson of wayward memories and new possibilities. My lips press together to keep the emotions at bay as I observe this man, processing the realization that I was never far from his mind during those years he was locked away, lost and afraid, just as he was never far from mine. We stayed connected. He turned me into something tangible, beautiful and real. “What did it feel like to you?” My mind is still spinning, my thoughts dizzy and blurred. I’ve never felt anything like that before, so I have little to compare it to, but I try to explain it the best I can. “Like every star in the galaxy tumbled to Earth and crawled beneath my skin.” “I love you, Syd. I loved you then, I love you now, and I’ll love you until my dying day.” There was never a question, never a doubt. I love this woman.

Once you know the meaning behind lotus, you will ugly cry.
∞ stars! Oliver Lynch must be protected at all costs 🥹 --- “I’m right here, with you, and I’m still holding onto your heart. Please don’t ask me to give it back.” Lotus is the story of Oliver Lynch, a little boy who was kidnapped on the Fourth of July and held captive for over two decades. Sydney Neville, his childhood best friend and next-door neighbor, never gave up hope of losing him. The news of his abduction left her traumatized and since then, continues living her life with a guarded heart. Twenty-two years later, Oliver is found alive. He's coming home. This heartwarming story was filled with friendship, love, compassion, trauma, and so many swoon-worthy moments. There is so much to learn about Oliver's past and your eagerness to learn will hold you captive (no pun intended) throughout the story. Jennifer Hartmann has an amazing ability to create such a beautiful story and her characters blew me away. I absolutely adored Oliver. He's the sweetest and purest cinnamon roll to fall in love with. What an amazingly brave and strong man to have survived living in a basement with no human contact (other than his captor) and still be so gentle, kind, and caring. His innocence and the way he took things literal was hilarious and adorable. Sydney is fun, quirky, and her love for 90's nostalgia never cease to make me smile. She helps him acclimate back into today's society, a world he thought was wiped out of humanity. Oliver, in turn, helps her liberate herself from the fears that made her afraid to lose him all over again. These two are wonderfully crafted characters who endured traumatic experiences when they were younger. We're able to see the growth and development as individuals and as a couple. Their relationship doesn't feel rushed or forced, allowing them to rebuild a foundation of their friendship before love begins to set in. While these two may have physically been separated for twenty-two years, they were both very much in each other's hearts. Once you know the meaning behind lotus, you will ugly cry. Childhood friends to lovers will remain superior in my eyes.

This was my first Book of the author and I was completely blown over. It was a perfect read. So beautiful, heartbreaking and yet so very hopeful. I absolutely loved it. Reading it felt like I am actually watching a motion picture and it was so picture perfect. First and most importantly, hats off to to the author for coming up with and doing complete justice to Oliver's character. He was written so beautifully and earnestly and in a very believable way, especially after the trauma he endured and how it changed him and molded him. His love story with Sydney was fairytale like and it was so sweet to read. Starting from their childhood all the way to the present, where Sydney healed him and stood him and supported him? Geez, it calls for tissues. This is what makes a wonderful love story and these two had it all. And my fav after Oliver is undoubtedly Gabe, his brother and Sydney's best friend. I loved his rapport with Oliver and his closeness with Sydney is the best example of platonic friendship. Though at the core it's a love story - there is so much more to the story. It's about survival, strength and friendship. There are quite a few twists and turns, though not too shocking but the symbolism takes the cake, and those references from the past that is seen in a completely different light in the present? It's very beautifully written. 5 stars and more for this book. This is a very good second chance romance and a slow burn. Can't wait to read more from the author.

4.5 stars There is something about Jennifer Hartmann's writing that just engrosses you into the story! It is captivating, beautifully written, and thought out. This book tells the story of Oliver, who was abducted 22 years ago on the 4th of July when he was a little boy. While in captivity, Oliver was told the world outside didn't survive. However, in reality, Oliver's family and friends never stopped looking for him. Particularly, Sydney, Oliver's best friend. 22 years later, Oliver escapes and has to adapt back into normal society. This book has a dual POV of both Oliver and Sydney, which was fascinating to read. We got to see Sydney's thoughts and feelings as well as Olivers' flashbacks and recovery. The first 60% of this book is based on Oliver and his interactions with other people, and the bonds/friendships he makes. His feelings towards Sydney are also explored. The last 40% is primarily based on what happened to lead up to the kidnapping. What happened in the basement, etc. Oliver and Sydney are both such nice characters that I enjoyed getting to know them both separately and together. Overall, I loved this book, and I would highly recommend it. I would definitely read still beating first because we do see a few characters from that book. However, both books can be read as a standalone.
