You can play it as a single player only .... although it signs you into a server.

It did an update upon installing so presume yes

Q: Can I sit on the sofa with my friends and play this together? I’m new to this - will it “split screen” so we can play together???

No,I'm affraid not.Just solo and no split screen.I've played it with a friend and we took turns,swapping over when we died,whilst the other one blathered advice. Gears of War,4 and 5 are both split screen and very good.You can pick up a used copy of GoW 4,used for a fiver,off Amazon as it's been out a while.
