This is exactly what I was missing
I had a sudden craving for idlis over the quarantine... But didn’t want to go through the hassle of making them with a steel cooker , not to mention the cleaning.. This does the job really well. Can make 12 idlis at a time, and they do turn out pretty well. They are not a substitute for the softer idlis you can make with the traditional steel cooker, but I’ve methods online where you could probably add items to the batter to make it softer which you can explore to get the same output.. My process is I fill it with about 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water at the bottom, and cook it for 6-7 minutes.. Sometimes the bottom layer tends to be a little undercooked, but it’s nothing another 2 mins in the oven won’t fix.. Give this one a shot, especially if you’re living with a max of 2 members in a household and don’t need to make idlis in bulk. Happy cooking ⏲🧑🍳

Decent alternative to a traditional idli maker if you have the instructions (see comment).
Idlis turned out great! Smooth, fluffy and airy. My only complaint was maybe the shape; the idli was perfectly moundy on one side somewhat more flat on the other. I used Double Horse’s 1 hour Idli mix. As there weren’t any instructions, I experimented by following a YouTube video which basically involves: 1) lightly greasing the mounds 2) adding fermented batter into the moulds 3) adding water to the base of the steamer 4) close and lock the steamer lid 5) microwave on regular setting for 3 mins, then another 2 mins. And then leave out to cool for 1 min. Use a spatula to remove. Microwave setting vary.

Quick and easy Idli maker!
I am not Indian, but was still able to make perfect Idli with this steamer! I tried them at an Indian restaurant and was hooked - but refused to pay $5 for 2 idli... so I got this steamer. I added a little bit of water to the bottom as one of the reviewers suggested - and I got perfect idli on my first try - in 4 minutes! I’ve learned that different Idli mixes and/or adding seasonings/herbs/small pieces of meat or veggies means that they will take longer to steam (an extra 3 or 4 minutes), but still come out perfect! I love that it is so easy to use and clean. It’s also nice to not have to break out the pressure cooker and heat up the house with steam. The first batch in the pics was plain, and the 2nd had a little MTR Spiced Chutney Powder added in - DELICIOUS!

Disappointing Quality and Uneven Results
This idli maker was a big letdown. The plastic feels flimsy, and the idlis come out unevenly cooked no matter how carefully you follow the instructions. Steam doesn’t distribute well, and the trays don’t stay stable in the microwave. Overall, it just doesn’t perform the way it should.

Practical but cheap looking mold
Typical Indian cheap quality. Same as 50 years ago. I wish if it made in china or American/EU company set the standards. Poor looking and unfinished mold and very low quality look plastic. Container is good though. I don’t know if it’s a food grade item. When will it change India?

Put water in the bottom but idlis will still be dryer
But it is so fast and convenient! Just dab cups with coconut oil or ghee, put some water in the bottom, fill about 2/3, stack trays offset (if you are making more than one tray -- it works fine with 1, 2, or 3) and microwave 9 min. Cleans up very easily and I wash mine in the top rack of the dishwasher. One star docked because they are not as light and fluffy, and also because of this they get tougher as the sit. But zip zip zip and done! And so easy to clean. Really though only make as many as you will eat right then. They won't even be tender broken into sambar later.
