Q: Are the size markings embossed into each tool or just printed/etched onto the surface.

Each thread checker is permanently identified by stamping. The zinc-plated inch series markings are then filled with red paint and the black oxide metric series with white paint. Identity markings include both the thread major diameter and thread pitch. If and when the filler paint wears out each size remains identifiable due to the stamping depth.

The purpose of the thread checker is to identify existing threads. There is no mention of drill size except that a 1/4"-20 bolt should fit a 1/4" hole and so on for each thread size. If the intention is to thread something, drill size should be noted with the tap or dye. Where these thread checkers really come in handy is for close SAE and Metric sizes. I have several styles and love them all. The thread checker on a flat plate like a drill gauge is the cheapest but it is good if it will fill your needs but the sizes are restricted. The others cost more but are worth it.
