Excellence from build to support
Having moved out of the area of comms over 20 years ago (maintaining high-power marine radar & comms systems - with exposure to commercial, aka very expensive, test equipment) I was looking at getting back into the amateur-radio side of things. Had never heard of SDR so was intrigued to give it a go - absolutely gobsmacked with what you can do with this dongle. For the price it really is quite amazing, from the build quality to its performance and functionality (obviously via s/w on a laptop).

Nice kit. Works well.
Great piece of kit. Bought to explore the world of SDR. Spends most of its time attached to a Rasberry Pi displaying aircraft within about 150 miles. Lots of free software to use with it, on a Pi as well as a PC. Does get a bit too warm for my liking, but only if you thrash the sample rate, but otherwise no issues at all.

Great way to waste some time
I bought this SDR kit out of interest. If you do the same then be prepared to waste many hours listening to inter-station mush trying to find something worth listening to. The included antennas are OK but very limited (Hint: get a ground plane - an old baking sheet is a good start). The software I use (SDR#) works very will, I recommend it - If you add a DSD decoder you can even intercept digital transmissions - There goes another 20 hours of your life. So, for the experimenter, this is a great piece of kit and well worth the money - Just be aware of its limitations - particularly the need for a GOOD wideband antenna mounted as high as possible.

I lost interest!
Unfortunately the interest level started to peak and then fade after about 15 minutes playing around. The antennas I'm sure would be fine in strong signal areas, otherwise a good antenna outside and as high as possible will give the best results. I have a home made 1/4 wave for 2 metre in the roof space which works well on the ham bands and those close, but the bandwidth isn't the best. Outside on the chimney of my bungalow is a marine fm/am fibreglass antenna, and as far as my analyzer says it is good for fm (I don't listen to am anyway), dab and lots of freq inbetween, excluding tv! This was erected about 10 years ago on 11/4" aluminium poil and used some very good quality military spec coax. This works well after making an SMA to PL259 pigtails going to the dongle. The quality of this thing is absolutely fantastic, well made, strong and sturdy with a decent antenna connection. I am using SDLTouch as software for analogue radio, Welle.io for dab, and AerialTV for freeview - on my android phone and tablet. BE AWARE: if you use it on your phone, especially on tv, you'll probably find your phone needing charged after about 40 mins! I havent tried a pc yet at time of writing, I'll add that if I remember. I might end up returning it due to lack of interest and the battery consumption! Does the job very well!

great value for money!
Are you fed up with the size and weight of your old VHF Receiver? Then get this nooelec and just plug it into your spare USB socket for 28MHz to 1.9GHz reception after just a couple of minutes downloading the dedicated software from their site. Real value for money! Around 30£ instead of 300£, for ultra sensitive signal reception, 100db down! Don't turn on your old vacuum cleaner, the interference would overload the front end of the nooelec!

It works okay.
It works. I use it with a Raspberry pi, and the quality is not the best, but I know that some other types are much more expensive. It might also depend on the Raspberry Pi having to work harder than a PC would. It arrived 2 weeks overdue.

Works great except easy adjustment may be required to prevent disconnects
First time with SDR and after plugging it, installing the driver and firing up SDR#, I was faintly receiving Spain, France and Germany on SSB in Scotland. Conditions are particularly good at the moment though, so may not be typical. I was using one of the supplied antenna on the window sill. Imagine it would be great with a larger antenna. I also bought an OTG cable for my phone so I can also use SDR software on there. I had originally left a poorer review complaining that there was a design flaw in that it disconnects with any movement due to the USB plug being a touch too short. Also reported by someone else. However, after contacting Nooelec support, who responded in lightening speed (20 mins), they advised I just loosen the nut on the SMA end which allows you to push the internals along a little to expose more of the USB plug. Then just tighten the nut again. Really easy to do and solved my problem. They said it wouldn't invalidate the warranty. So I'm now pleased with the item and with the support provided.

Meh
This should be not this hard to get running ! What it should be is a simple install with a bit of code , what it seems to be is an advert for some random maths site wanting a subscription ! I'm sure the item is very good but and nooelec have a website that assumes everyone uses Windows ! I don't and the installation guide seems hell bent on advertising raspberry pis instead of how to install their product ! Gave up and chucked it in the bin of products that should be great but didn't work

Very nice SDR. One thing I noticed regarding other SDR devices comments, is how warm or hot these can get. This model does get warm, but not hot, even with use over 3 hours. I believe this is because of the new heat sink configuration inside the SDR USB. After purchase, the company sent me a link to their web site with very good instructions to install the required drivers and software, which was very easy to do, once my SDR arrived. Their web page also has several SDR software packages that can be downloaded, but I prefer SDR#. Very good reception on most bands, including HAM, air, law enforcement, CB, etc. and of course FM. Antennas work well and even better with ground plane. The antenna base is magnetic and I highly recommend putting antenna on something metallic (i.e. steel) such as a cookie sheet or something like that, this will greatly improve reception of the frequencies.
