From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during the holiday break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them - a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) - and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).BONUS FEATURES* DELETED SCENES* WORKING WITH ALEXANDER* THE CAST OF THE HOLDOVERS* AND MORE!

the film of the year?
I saw this film the same day that I watched 'Poor Things'. That film got all the media attention and the awards, but 'The Holdovers' is the one that has stayed with me. This is a film for people who like reading novels - it's thoughtful, funny, warm-hearted but not sentimental, and it takes you into a completely realised world. I loved it.

far better than we expected - head and shoulders above Sideways
We bought this DVD mainly based on the generally good reviews of Sideways, another Paul Giamatti film, which we also bought at the same time. Frankly, the latter film is tedious in the extreme, and we binned it after scarcely a half hour, whilst The Holdovers actually has a good story line and fair production values, and it kept us entertained until the end. Not a masterpiece by any means but certainly worth watching.

Fantastic
A wonderful film. From the same Director as the classic Sideways, and once again featuring the always excellent Paul Giamatti. A heart warming, life affirming black comedy, with a great sense of time. Too many new films of the last few years have left me a little cold (Oppenheimer for one), but this seems like a return to proper old fashioned story telling and film making. And that’s a good thing.

An engaging comic drama
Although somewhat modest in terms of its setting and storyline, this film is extremely well acted and offers subtle characterisation and theme. It is often very amusing, but there is also an underlying poignancy to a number of the scenes. It is a film to watch more than once.
