Q: Is the writing clear enough for children to read?

Yes it is..our grand daughter loves to look at it.

Q: What is the stand made of and what is the height including the stand?

The base is a dark wood grain look made of wood composite material of some kind. Measures about 15" bottom to top. You can check it our for yourself at one of our WIDE WORLD MAPS and MORE! stores in the Phoenix, AZ area.

Q: Will I be able to use push pins in this globe to track my travels?

I don't think it will work. The globe is too hard. We have a map from National Geographic and it is made for putting in pins, in fact they supply you with red pins. It is an nice wall map!

Q: What is the truth about the up-to-date-ness of this globe? on one hand, it says: replogle globe with blue educational shading and 2015 country lines.

The maps seem reasonably up to date.
