Los Angeles, Christmas Eve: a series of power outages, minor earth tremors and other strange events threaten to ruin the holidays. But when the residents of a suburban apartment block experience a sudden total blackout, they are determined to investigate. Deep in the cavernous basement they make a shocking discovery - what is seemingly the breeding ground of a new race of blood-thirsty creatures. With it quickly becoming apparent that the frightening occurrences overtaking LA are connected, this group of rag-tag neighbours must put aside their differences and fight to save their city from an eternal blackness. With time running out and the murderous creatures just getting started, they know they must restore the power, as when the lights go out for good, the feeding will begin… Review: Surprisingly good. - I really was pleasantly surprised by this movie, after reading all the bad reviews about it, I wasn't expecting much, but fortunately I was proved wrong. Ok, it's not a big budget production, nor will the acting win any Oscars, but believe me, I've seen a whole lot worse from people who should have known better. Although some of the CGI is a little dodgy at times, the cast put in some serious performances, doing their best with what they've got to work with. It's never a dull movie and is quite suspenseful at times, great scenes of panic in a lift shaft being one of them. Happy to have it in my collection, and most definitely will watch it again. Not bad at all. Review: Not terrible, not great either. - A good time waster. Not particularly scary, but passable acting and the "terrible" graphics/CGI others have mentioned is really not that bad.

dire, abysmal, soul destroyingly bad movie
The only thing worse than the special effects in this movie (think men in cheap rubber suits) is the acting. At no time was I remotely scared or even entertained while viewing Blackout. I have never reviewed anything online, but this movie prompted me to. It really is that horrible. Now if I could only get the wasted minutes back that I spent watching it.

“Trollop! Do people still use that word?” [Ethan]
This 2009 sci-fi horror focuses on a group of tenants in a plush multi-story apartment block on Christmas Eve who try to escape the building after earth tremors trigger a city-wide blackout trapping them inside, but they soon find themselves stalked and attacked by terrifying creatures. Exactly what are the creatures, will they destroy them and will anybody survive? This 15 rated film tries a light-hearted festive start presumably to highten the drama but it sets a very evening matinee feel to the film crashing your expectations, not helped by the cover graphics, poor special effects, lack of atmosphere [feels like a stage production] leading to unconvincing acting. But it then suddenly picks up as the ‘grown ups’ realise monsters are trying to kill them. Best acting goes to the young girl [Abigail Droeger], she certainly can scream! The single disc loads to 5 trailers then goes to main menu offering play, scene selection and audio [5.1/2.0]. There are so many flaws, inconsistencies and implausible situations, the only thing this had going for it was the overall musical score and a handful of brief quality scenes, the remainder was Sunday matinee hokum in the best 50’s tradition. A good concept, but poorly executed as its got some gory scenes making a hard hitting 15, but will not please many looking for a more 18 rating who'd be better off viewing with a few stiff drinks and a pizza or two and this might prove a good laugh and a future classic although to be fair, the last half hour does have some good atmosphere with gory deaths which makes you think you’ve changed discs, which stops this being a *** disaster.

Starts good ends badly
I just wanted to say this is on Lovefilm. As a movie it seems to be like any other monster story. They arrive, the terrorise and then we try to wipe them out. It has some great ideas but the effects let them down as do the rather poor rubber suited monsters.
