Review: Absolutely amazing... - I was introduced to this guitar-playing singer by a friend who saw him in the 70's. The amazing thing is that I don't really go for this sort of thing? This said, how very wrong can a person be? What started me off was the question "name your top five guitarists of all time...?" Try it yourself. We said "T-bone Walker and his friends like Muddy Waters, George Harrison, Willy Nelson, Dave Gilmore, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Mark Knopfler, Slash, Brian May, entire cast of Wishbone Ash, maybe Montrose not to mention Bob Marley or Eric Clapton, or Mark Bolam..." then we gave up, becasue it was too much to discern. Please note that playing guitar loud, or quickly, or like a person possessed is not necessarily the goal! Just listen to Free (A mouthful of Grass) for example, or Simon and Garfunkel (Emily), or indeed the entire album of Wishbone Ash (Argus). Phenomenal. You see, to cut a long and boring recommendation short, Rory Gallagher in many ways ecclipses all of these. Why? Well because he plays guitar music from his soul; the early blues rock right through to his more developed anthems, to delta-like blues, to jazz-blues, to blues-blues. And then of course he sings too. I'm going to classify the five CD's you get in this value for money box set as follows- i) something mellow ii) something shocking iii) something mind-numbingly deep and complex iv) something shallow v) something for driving vi) something for the kids vii) something to jigging about the room. But always, this is good music. Try listening to the "Ghost Blues" without head banging; or indeed, if you just tap your foot- then don't go any further. In fact, stop listening to music altogether you are probably dead. Enjoy. Review: An excellent overview of Rory at an unbeatable price - I only 'discovered' Rory Gallagher 3 months' ago, thanks to video footage on an Italian daily music programme. It was like being struck by lightning...and so sad to think that he died 15 years' ago...I grew up in the UK and was listening to other rock music in the 70's and 80's.... my loss. I have purchased other CD's by Rory and have yet to find one I didn't like. This collection is a great purchase by anyone who already appreciates Rory's music. It covers almost all of his post-Taste career, from the second solo album,(which is my favourite of the five, leading on from where his previous LP left off...a mix of raunchy guitar licks, jazz-influenced 'There's a Light', the pure blues of 'Should've Learnt My Lesson' the gorgeous wistful 'Maybe I Will'), the great 'Calling Card' (another cracking album with a whole range of rock-blues, acoustic, the blistering 'Jacknife Beat' and the classic 'Barley and Grape Rag'), through the more rock-oriented 'Top Priority' and 'Jinx', to complete the collection with 'Fresh Evidence', which takes us back to a more bluesy atmosphere. Rory's health was already failing but his energy and grit show no trace. At a bargain price, this is a great addition to any fan's CD collection.

Top Quality
Having only discovered Rory Gallagher last year I now have 7 albums with more on the way. This pack of 5 albums is tremendous value and gives you a great taste of how good a versatile guitarist Rory was. You get, slow, lively, moving and fiddly guitar work. I find it hard to believe the strength of his work and how it has taken me so long to discover this highly gifted artist. His singing complements the songs and is a must for anyone who likes blues songs with an edge.

Quality from a Secret Agent
Excellent selection of albums, although Rory didn't make bad ones in my opinion. For a very low price any newcomer to Rory's music can enjoy a real mixture. I think my first album was Calling Card on vinyl and it hasn't aged, in fact I enjoy it more! Deuce is a lovely early album which is rock with a soft edge. If you have liked any other Rory tracks you can't go wrong with this set.

Genius!
There's little I can add that hasn't already been said by previous reviewers. Rory Gallagher was, without question, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. The word 'genius' is used far too frequently but it is fully justified when describing the talent of this man. A wonderfully versatile and gifted musician, Rory is still sadly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to witness one of his legendary live performances. This collection provides a very good overview of the great man's recorded work but to truly appreciate why he is so highly regarded, I recommend purchasing one of his live albums - ideally the live collection 'Let's Go To Work'.

Great value, essential for Rory Gallagher fans, but seek out his other albums too
The albums here are: Deuce (1971) Calling Card (1976) Top Priority (1979) Jinx (1982) Fresh Evidence (1988) Now, this is a great value set and an essential purchase if you want to hear Rory Gallagher's blend of blues rock - and who wouldn't? That said, while very good this set does not include my own favourites which are Tattoo and the live set Irish Tour 74. This is a slightly odd selection to choose as your only Rory Gallagher CDs. Still, I am not complaining. Deuce , Calling Card and Jinx are among his best. Top Priority is good and Fresh Evidence, while perhaps the weakest here, has many strong moments. Bonus tracks are included.

Great Value
Saw Rory Gallagher back in the 70's at De Montfort Leicester. Only went for a look wasn't particularly a fan. Good gig though but I didn't take it further. Only now begining to really appreciate the music. I have a couple of compilations but these are my first original albums so great value at just over two quid an album. This will keep me occupied for some time then i'll try the live albums. If you haven't got these albums or are looking to replace your vinyl you can't go wrong.

As you go through the CD's in order you can get a taste of how Rory's talent progresses from one CD to the next. Rory is a rare talent who lived for his fans and tried to outperform his self with every performance. He lived to perform live. A very emotional lyricist, sonic guitarist, and genuine human being. Rory deserved better exposure and a much higher rating as an all round performer. He's gone and that's a shame, but his music will live on. Listen to the next Irish sensation Simon McBride Since Then So many discs. So may tunes.
