30 Notes Hand Crank Music Box Movement with Copper Gear DIY Make Your Music Tool Kit (With Bamboo Box)

This has beautiful sound! I thought it would be tinny. At first I planned on building my own, as I had for my 20 note music box. But I am glad I got the whole thing. Simple and works great. I've upgraded from all plastic to copper gears, which apparently is a bit noisier, but the plastic ones broke on my old unit and it was noisy too. One drawback might be the notes you see on the paper aren't the notes you actually hear.

We got this for my 11 year old for Christmas and she was so excited! She is very musical, she plays piano and violin. I would say this is best for someone who is at least familiar with music and reading music will be very helpful. You can figure out songs my googling things, but it is much easier if you understand time signatures and notes. So far it has functioned well, seems sturdy and is a good size. My girl has made a couple songs already and I think it will be a fun thing for her to have for a while.

The box is at F key while the papers are C, but the description says the opposite. Guess they mixed it up. But other than that, the box works as expected. You can use script for a C key music box, it'll just be transposed up by 5 semitones but it'll play fine. Recommend to use it with the box closed since it has more resonance that way.

I had returned one of these boxes, thinking that it was faulty, but the fault was mine. Here's what happened: I always test new 30-note DIY music boxes with a test strip I made years ago to make sure each note works. When I tried it, the lower 3rd of the notes became partially engaged when the leading paper edge first passed through, and these notes played (released) much later than they should have. So I returned it, and got a replacement, and the same thing happened. The problem? It turns out that my test strip was of a slightly lighter paper thickness than most of my other strips (it's probably from the early days of 30-note music boxes). My other music boxes can tolerate this difference, but these (being sold here) need the standard paper width you get these days, and then they work just fine. They're very nice resonating boxes, nice 'n loud, beautiful tones.

I’m enjoying this a lot. I punched this song by Dido—Thank You—with help from the composers who post tablature for these music boxes on music box maniacs. I only got this a few days ago and I’ve already gone through most of the paper strips and ordered more, as well as a 10 meter roll so I can cut it to the right size for the song instead of taping the strips together like this one. I did put a little rubber feet on the bottom of the box because it was sliding around too much when I turned the crank.
