good for cutting fruit
When you work in a restaurant, you realize that all knives are sharp out of the box, but what sets a great knife apart is its ability to hold its edge and not need constant sharpening. I've been using this Geschickt Kitchen Knife, Damascus Utility Knife 5 inch for a few weeks to cut sushi rolls in the restaurant -- a sharp edge is necessary to cleanly cut through the dried seaweed. I really like that the sticky rice doesn't get stuck on the Damascus blade, and it is holding its edge decently -- I've had better but I've had a lot worse.I know others complain about the handle, but I have a small hand and I don't have an issue. I think it would be better with indentations for fingers (like Cutco or Wusthoff) but I didn't really mind the round handle. It didn't fall out of my hands, even with plastic food service gloves on. My really expensive Shun knife has a similar handle. The blade is a lot smaller than I thought, even though it said a 5" blade. It is really the perfect size to cut an apple or other piece of fruit, but not really to cut meat or large vegetables (like cabbage). It barely cuts through two sushi rolls side by side.I think it's a good knife, especially for the price.

Beautiful and functional kitchen knife.
This beautiful knife is a compendium of fine knife things: a modern composite (G10) handle, high-end Japanese steel (VG10), a German brand name, and hammered/layered blade construction modeled after that of ancient "Damascus" swords. The 5" blade length, marketed as a "fruit knife", is a bit larger than most paring knives, but smaller than a chef's, making it a handy tool for all kinds of intermediate tasks. In practice, the knife feels comfortable and well balanced in my hand. True to its billing, it is razor sharp out of the box. I've found VG10 steel to have an ideal combination of edge retention and workability, meaning that I expect to be able to keep it nearly that sharp with regular honing (I use a steel) and occasional sharpening, at home. The product description calls the handle 'D'-shaped, a description that is often applied to left or right handed knives, where one side of the handle is flatter than the other. These can be a problem for me because I'm left-handed and frequently end up with the wrong handle. However, that's not the case here as the knife works equally well in either hand. If there's a 'D' to the handle, it is that the top of the handle is flatter than the sides and bottom. Overall it's beautifully shaped and very comfortable. It was shipped with the usual small clear plastic tip protector. A full blade protector would have been greatly appreciated but isn't a deal breaker. There are a lot of beautiful and functional 5" kitchen knives available at whatever price you're willing to pay. If this one matches your personal style, I don't think you would be disappointed with it.

Nice blade, horrible huge handle
I am not happy with this knife, and I will probably never use it. The blade is very sharp, and I have no complaints about the blade. The handle, however, is horrible. It is so incredibly wide and thick, I cannot get a good grip on it. I feel like I am holding a huge tree branch in my hand. It is very uncomfortable to try and hold and control, and I do not feel safe using this knife.
