I have been running this raid box for about a week now, only in normal mode for now, and it has been everything you would expect. The drives install easily and the case is very sturdy with quality plastic. I would point out that noise level is almost non-existent despite the description. I honestly can't even hear it with the fan I run also whirring. The packaging box was slightly damaged so, to safeguard my drives, I went through the reset procedure on the back of the unit before adding drives, just to make sure it had not been set to a RAID configuration if this was a return. My drives recognized quickly when inserted hot. No complaints so far.

So far so good. Using it on a linux home media server with 2x 20TB drives and RAID 1. Linux detected it immediately and after i set to RAID 1 and held the reset button it popped up as a HW RAID and GParted worked perfectly, now working to transfer my 8TB of Data to it. Biggest complaint is that the plastic rails take some fussing with to get perfect, but otherwise work great.

Very nice enclosure with good quality. Love the drive mounting method... no hardware required. The transfer rate of these particular enclosures is 5MB/s which is fine for use as a storage device... the larger 4 bay enclosure is a 10MB/s transfer rate. The RAID choices is very nice, too.The only problem I have experienced is that the drives do not spin down. They are always on and spinning. They can be turned on/off via the power switch located at the rear of the enclosure but in my experience, they should spin down via hardware command after period of time.

It is extremely fast -- it bricked four Ironwolf NAS drives within seconds!!! I am a long time IT guy. User of RAID since the late eighties. Needed simple storage to offload some old files from my NAS. Set up and tested all four Ironwolf drives with SeaTools before installation and they were perfect. Installed all four (I wish I only had installed one...) into the enclosure and turned it on. Unit is supposed to come up as four separate drives which you then reconfigure into RAID config that you want to use. Four drives each lit up with blue (normal) led indicators, but the unit would never mount the drives -- no indication of USB device in explorer nor disk management. Powered down and pulled one drive out. Connected it directly via a usb cable and the drive would no longer mount. Left the drive connected with only power and it was usb recognized after approx 30 minutes (this is a hidden reset feature on some ssd drives). However, drive would still not mount. Ran SeaTools on the drive and found that the firmware values were all corrupted. Example, SeaTools stated the drive was 31245893.4 gB in size. Tried to use SeaTools to initialize the drive and it failed. Tried to use SeaTools to reset the firmware parameters I could see -- failed again. Therefore, I have two shipments to make on Monday -- sending this piece of crap back to Amazon and sending all four drives back to Seagate for warranty exchange. FYI , if you are brave enough to try this unit, please note that changing the config of the unit is not as simple as it seems. The unit uses dip switches, so you would figure that turning off the power and changing the dips would suffice. However, the procedure --not significantly called out in the very spartan manual -- is to power down, change the dips, hold the reset button down for ten seconds while bringing the power back up. The reset button is required to get the unit to recognize that the config has changed. I am wondering if my unit was a return that was resold and the dip switch config LOOKED as if it was set to factory default startup, but maybe someone had tried a RAID config and then set the dips back to the default without doing the "Reset+Power up" to flash the change back to factory default. Unit looked new, but OEM box had no tape on it and one of the drive trays was missing its "peel-off" plastic film. In any case, Caveat emptor!

This was the only enclosure I could find that could handle 20tb drives. I bought it just to make sure and then bought the 6 bay unit. I use it to back up my 100tb compelleant array. Everything was easy peasy. I'll probably get another 6 bay although I can only find the 8 bay now, but that is fine. I plan to daisy chain them for redundant backup. We just moved and still unpacking, but these were some of the first to get set back up.

If you follow the directions on the back of the unit, they are wrong. It will not connect. It was not until I discovered that the directions and the pamphlet and the paperwork that it came in were correct. I can’t believe they made terrible mistake like that

Good indication lights on front panel that the thing is working.That's why I went for this enclosure.Zero hardware assy worked quite well, I like that alot. HDD fit secure and snug.RAID options are nice, though I am going with Normal mode, since if the controller fails, so are lost the RAID data.Recommend.update: the fan is a little noisy as the box heats up, so advice is to raise it on some foam pads and that will stop fan from resonating with a wood shelf (in my case).update 2: I am seeing write speeds to a disk inside at up to 1.5Gbps, so this puppy can move USB 3 data at a decent rate.
