HAD SIM CARD STUCK IN IT
Overall it works, but the one I received was obviously a prior amazon return; The previous user had inserted a mini/micro sim, SIDEWAYS, into the sim tray (which takes one full size sim card), and stuck it so far in that you couldn't retrieve it.Had to completely disassemble the unit to fix this - Take a 1.2 mm hex bit driver, and remove the bottom battery cover (it snaps out don't worry, use your fingernails or something to pry that up); From there, remove or loosen the 2 screws on the sides of the battery compartment. Then, use your fingernails and/or a plastic wedge tool to pry up and remove the top plastic around the screen. This is secured on the outer edges by plastic, and then has glue near the screen area. You will have to carefully pull it up off of the adhesive. In my case this didn't damage anything.Once this is removed, you will have 6 additional 1.2mm hex bit screws, arranged 3 above the screen and 3 below the screen in the same horizontal positions.Remove these, and you should then be able to separate the circuit board/ screen from the plastic shell. BE AWARE / CAREFUL that the circuit board and screen are at this point only held together by ribbon / flex cables - They don't seem TOO delicate, in that mine didn't rip with me pulling this up while they were connected, but generally just be careful with those. After that I was able to lift the screen off the board and use a tiny screwdriver through the small holes on top of the sim tray slot to push out the sim card that was stuck in there.Overall you're looking at a ~15-30 minute job to do that if you wind up in the same situation.Aside from that!! The hotspot does work well and generally gets ~4x the speeds of my phone in poor reception areas, so the antennas on it seem to be somewhat significantly beefed up from what you'd find in a phone - Can attest to this as now I have physically seen them.... Basically either side of the screen is a massive antenna.

Defective
When the hotspot arrived I installed the battery, powered the unit on and was greeted by the message NO BATTERY, I have two of these already with this same issue. At that point the unit locked, dropped the internet connection and would not respond. The only way to power it off is to remove the battery. A search of the internet indicates that others have had this same issue with this device and there is no fix for it. I replace one of these last year for this problem. I ordered this one to replace a second device with this issue making this one my third with this same failure. Returned the device and I will find something that works.

It's the old model, but my first impression is it's better than the new model
This is the old one and I didn't know that when I ordered. I also didn't catch that the sim card is the old large size. I luckily had a sim adapter. Do not try to stick your micro or nano sim in this slot or you risk losing your sim and damaging the sim slot on the hot spot, making it useless. I was actually replacing the newer Unite model and got this one by mistake. I don't think it was a bad purchase and I'm keeping it. On the newer version of the Unite hot spot the external antenna port fell off mine. The old version might be better. It seems to have more settings, but a smaller battery. Some settings I like on this one is you can force it to stay on LTE, the newer model went back and forth to the edge network. I also notice this one has a VPN pass through. On the newer model I was having issues connecting to my work VPN. If you need an AT&T tower and an external antenna the Unite seems to be the best model. I use it for my cabin in the woods on a river with a Yagi directional antenna. It works great, middle of nowhere and I'm getting 9-13mbps. Those antenna ports are weak, so I no longer unplug it from the antenna. Instead I got a wifi repeater for $25 and plugged it in outside and I've got tons of range. The neighbors can pick it up a football field away.

Exactly what I needed - mobile hotspot replacement
I purchased this same model through AT&T on my data plan for use on the go and also inside the office where our cell/data service is spotty and unreliable. I tried ordering another one through AT&T, only to find out that they no longer sell this model and I would have to purchase a different hotspot (which would've cost me more over 2-3 times as much). I decided to search on Amazon, and I was able to find the same exact model, and it was less expensive. Note: it does not come with a SIM card, so you need to get one from AT&T (if you have a mobile account or data plan with them, it's not a problem). In summary, it works great and I saved money by purchasing through Amazon.
