Mild smell. Very soft texture.
I make natto at home, but I have been wanting to try freeze-dried natto, and now I have! Here is my review:Amount: The amount in the directions is very little. I used 4 teaspoons (20g), which was the perfect size for me.*Appearance: It looks like regular natto: light brown and slightly shiny.*Smell: It has a very mild compared to regular natto. Somewhat nutty scent.*Texture: Unlike regular natto, it is very soft and very easily smushed with my tongue. It has a nice, stretchy, slimy texture, and I can tell that the natto bacteria is alive and well.*Taste: It has a slightly nutty and bitter taste, just like regular soybeans.I added about 1/2 teaspoon of dashi stock and 1/8 teaspoon of soy sauce and mixed it. Then, I topped it with chopped green onions and homemade salmon flakes. It was decent natto.I also used it for natto making. I put about 15 dried natto beans in the roasted steamed soybeans, hoping it would make perfect natto. However, there was very little stickiness; the natto bacteria didn’t multiply well. Next time, I will try using rehydrated natto and see it works well.

Bland and you need more than 10g per serving
When you open the bag, it is S-T-I-N-K-Y. I followed the instructions to take 2 teaspoons or 10 gram of freeze-dried natto beans from the bag, put them in a bowl, fill with water just enough to cover them, and put it in the fridge for 2-3 hours. So I put the beans a little after 9:30 AM and because of work meetings didn't pull them out of the fridge until 2 PM to eat lunch. By then 4.5 hours had passed, so I guess that contributed to the extra soft texture and mushiness? The natto did get a little sticky, but it was still a little watery. Also, two teaspoons was too little in amount - the frozen packs I get from Asian grocery stores are probably at least 4 times the amount. The freeze-dried nattos also had no flavor, they were really bland. I figured the other seasoning my rice bowl would probably help, so I ate it anyway for gut health... but I think I'll just stick to the usual frozen natto packs.

Tastes real
Yep, it tastes real, it is the Real thing 😃 and I'm so glad for that, after spending money in vain on 'Natokinase' pills that tasted just simple rice powder 😑

Prepared As Directed, Smelled & Tasted Horrible, Unfortunate Experience For Me
I was looking forward to trying these, since I do like soy beans and I've never had Natto before.I prepared it exactly as instructed, left it covered in my refrigerator for 2.5 hours until tender. I stirred it around when I took it out and it had the consistency of thick stew gravy.I enthusiastically took a bite and immediately wanted to spit it out, but I soldiered on to finish chewing and swallowing it. I really wanted to like it! But between the consistency and the horrific taste, I couldn't take a second bite. It smelled awful too.I don't quite understand what happened here. The expiration date is over 18 months away, so it wasn't anywhere near expired. I don't know if I got a bad batch or if this is something that people need to develop a taste for, like cigarettes or liverwurst?Either way, this was gaggingly awful for me -- and I have a very strong stomach for anything that's not spicy -- which was a huge disappointment.I was going to give it 3 stars, but then my husband walked in and said, "UGH What is that horrible smell?!" At that point I knew it wasn't just me, so I tossed it on some weeds outside and decided it would have to be 2 stars.Hopefully mine was just a bad batch, and this will be enjoyable to others.

Good freeze dried, but deliciously slimy and smelly
I appreciate having freeze dried natto around since I can't always get fresh ones, they are quite expensive, especially when I compare it to the price in Japan. I've had all forms of dried natto, in furikake form or ground, but I often don't have whole freeze dried natto. I haven't rehydrated them yet, as the directions instruct, so I can't speak for that but the freeze dried beans themselves are pretty good, even in your mouth they are a bit slimy and have that familiar funky natto smell. So I'd say it's quite good, perhaps not the best quality beans I've ever had but a decent quality! For those who haven't tried natto, this is fermented and an acquired taste. If you haven't had natto before, I don't recommend you get this as your first experience and rate it based on that. My Japanese friends always make Americans try natto when they come to Japan just to get their reaction....they get so grossed out! And funny enough after a few months a few of them start loving it!For those who love natto, this is a great to have in your pantry

Good , just not for me
Easy to make and just how natto beans should be, slimy with a little odor. Very good for gut health but I don’t like slimy texture so this is not for me.

Interesting tasting
I have never had Natto before so take this for what it's worth. Preparation was quite easy as all you need to do is take a portion of the bag (10g) and place in a bowl with the powder already mixed in. The powder is what makes it sticky. Add water to the top of the beans being sure not to overfill so you don't dilute the powder too much. Put in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours for reconstitution and being sure to stir appropriately to mix the powder that is now sticky. Pretty simple instructions, just takes a bit of time. Taste is definitely unique. Add on top of rice to add some flavor. Made in Japan.
