Subjects Matter: Every Teacher's Guide to Content - Area Reading 1st Edition

This book was originally required for a graduate course I was taking. At the last minute it was dropped, which disappointed me, since it was the one I decided to read ahead of time for the class. Oh, well, I figured, no loss...it was a good read. When I read the one that was actually required, I changed my nonchalant attitude toward "Subject Matters". I realized it was much more applicable to classrooms and offered so much more practical information for me to really use. It was a pleasure to read and was not boring in the least.I recommended this book to my colleagues as a much better book than the one we were required to read.

When looking at content area reading it can be difficult to imagine what that actually looks like. Some may believe that their subject is immune or lacks a reading component at all. However, regardless of content area there is always a reading component that exist. This books really allows for one to browse several different content areas and see where they can plug in reading bits to assist in an overall literacy program throughout several different classes. I recommend this for any group of teachers that want to begin bridging their subject matters and assisting students in reading on a higher level overall.

This reads easy and is actually quite interesting. I enjoyed the chapters I have read from it for school. It is very informative.

This was a required book for a course for my Masters. Excellent book. Easy to read and use. Very beneficial as a classroom teacher when selecting and critiquing books.

Honestly, this is EVERY teacher's guide to integrating reading strategies into instruction! I have used almost every technique in here, and recommended many to my colleagues. Most are designed for grades 3 and above, but could be accommodated for primary classes too.

For newer teachers, the chapters on strategies are useful. Not much new, but-OK.

Subjects Matter is a wonderful reference book for any teacher. Along with research for all of the activities and learning theories, Subjects Matter includes authentic teaching situations for each activity recommended. It includes classroom activities for secondary education and is an easy and fun read.

Thanks to this book I feel more confident in how to teach reading of science literature. Easy to read and great ideas to implement.
