The only difference between the 504 in the 503 are Flushmate 503 series means it's a 1.6 gallons per flush system. And lastly, 504 series means 1.0 GPF.

Q: Can you use it when you have a septic tank?

We have had one for at least ten years and we have a septic tank. No issues at all.

Q: Is the distance between the 2 connections, on the bottom, adjustable?

The last two I've installed, the inlet connection is "attached" to the bottom of the pressure tank, but it's just pressed onto a molded pin. So it can be pulled off and repositioned if necessary. Which is a good thing, because on our toilets, repositioning WAS necessary.
