Thank you for your inquiry. Even if you choose wired mode, the nickel-metal hydride does NOT recharge.

Q: Can one comfortably use the index and middle finger to move the track able while also keeping the thumb near the scroll area?

Absolutely, yes. With this design, your thumb naturally positions itself over the scroll wheel while your index and middle finger are centered over the trackball itself.
