Q: Can the shovel digger piece extend and dig or does it stay folded up?

The digger (backhoe) extends and digs, but the connection piece snaps on/off and broke very easily (indoors), not even digging in the dirt. We loved the presentation of this as our son loved trucks, but we were really disappointed in how easily it broke, especially for the money. The flatbed was pretty sturdy.
