A must read for avid readers who enjoy an adventure, great writing most of all, and a colorful knowledge of what Africa was!
yes, this author has a fabulous command to the English language! I have read this story about 3 times, just for the words...! the story is spell binding and when we traveled to Africa it helped give me such a wonderful insight and appreciation for the country and its people. the music is awesome....and if interested, the movie "Power of One" is so similar to 'coloring' Africa for me....well, I just fell in love. Many years later a friend now recently has purchased a Rhodian Ridgeback dog...and this is why I purchased these stories for him....to read to see how smart and wonderful his dog is!!! and what a magnificent animal this breed truly is !one must read the first book in this series...A Story Like The Wind...before this book!!!!!ENJOY~!!!

A worthy sequel
The sequel to A Story Like The Wind. I read this as a teen and loved it as an adventure story. Reading it as an adult there are many nuances that I missed especially knowing that a friend's parents wee murdered in Zimbabwe I now find it a far more disturbing story but infinitely worth reading. It is a pity it is no longer in print. A candidate for kindle?

All school children should read these books!!
Laurens van der Post is one of my favorite writers. Through his storytelling he stirs the spirit of the African bush that is imprinted in all of us and awakens the memory of forgotten a soulful and simple world. Van der Post brings this side our our world and inner selves back to life and "A Story Like the Wind" and the sequel "A Far off Place", again do not disappoint. Through Francois, his dog Hinza, and Bushman Xhabbo and Noonie he takes us not only on an epic journey and adventure through Africas heart, but on the journey of a boy growing up in the world and the contrasting soulful, simple life of the BushmanA Far Off Place (Harvest/Hbj Book)

Van der Post is a master talent
An excellent read like all Van der Post books. But not as exciting as the precursor, A Story Like the Wind. One should read the first book first. The book arrived in excellent condition veryquickly.

Great story
My son loves this book so far. I told him I'd let him watch the movie after he reads this. Apparently this is a sequel. My bad.

A FAR OFF PLACE
I HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR A LONG TIME TO LOCATE THIS MOVIE. I HAD IT ON VHS WHICH IS OBSOLETE , NOW. I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE TITLE. I TRIED FINDING IT ON A DISNEY LIST, BUT I WASN'T HAVING ANY LUCK. THAT IS UNTIL IT WAS A MOVIE ON A NETFLIX LIST. I ORDERED IT RIGHT AWAY AND I'TS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS. I LOVE REESE WITHERSPOON. I REMEMBER THE VERY FIRST TIME I VIEWED THE MOVIE AND WAS STRUCK BY THE YOUNG GIRL.......HER LOOKS.......HER ACTING........IT'S ONE OF THOSE TIMELESS PIECES THAT I DON'T SEE THAT OFTEN .

Wonderful writing and enthralling story
Wonderful writing and enthralling story. Must start with A story Like The Wind. Avoid the movie. Does not portray the real story and strong humanitarian and anti racist message of Van Der Post.

A Boy's Adventure Tale
I learned a lot about living in the desert successfully from this is old-fashioned book about a boy coming of age. I loved the authorial philosophical comments, the super dog, and even the entrance of the British Navy--but not because I thought the book was great literature. The book is old enough that the hero can't see the racial inequality in which he lives and to which he objects. This book is the sequel to A Song on the Wind. If you are going to pick just one to read, read that one. It has the same great super dog.
