A great little tool. Check the manufacturing date of the battery.
Checking the manufacturing date of the battery should be the first thing you need to do when you get this tool. Lithium-ion batteries have a shelf life. Most of them don't go beyond 5 years regardless of whether it was used or not The manufacturing date is mentioned on the inner side of the battery. I won't accept the tool if the battery is more than two years old.Secondly, don't get confused by the botched up naming convention of Bosch. They have two different models with almost identical names - GSB 1080-2-LI and GSB 10,8-2-LI. The first one is a scaled down version of Bosch GSB 10,8-2-LI. The main differences are, 10,8-2-LI has more torque (30NM vs 28NM), It can handle larger drill bits and has a battery status indicator. It is also slightly smaller and lighter than GSB 1080-2-LI. It comes with two batteries and a better charger (AL 1130 CV).But, that doesn't mean that GSB 1080-2-LI is bad. It delivers exceptional value for money. It is 2.5k cheaper and has almost all features and specifications of GSB 10,8-2-LI. It is more than enough for most of the DIYers and hobbyists. I bought it from Amazon for 5999. You may get it from the local market for 5500. In terms of price, performance and features, competition is nowhere near it. Bosch's intention is to lure customers into their 10.8v family of tools with this one.The fit and finish of the tool is excellent. With the battery, it weights a little more than 1kg. Most of the weight is concentrated at the top front end. It is very comfortable to hold. Like other Bosch drills, forward and reverse is selected by a slide switch. Unlike the corded drills, the slide switch has a mid position to lock the trigger. It has a two speed gearbox. The high torque 1st gear give a maximum 400rpm. Low torque second gear delivers a maximum 1300rpm. Overall build quality of the tool is good.Essentially, it is a cordless screw driver with a keyless chuck so that it can also be used as a drill. The chuck is very smooth and precise. Once locked, it grips the round shank drill bits really well. It may even leave marks on the shank of the drill bits if you over-tighten it. The chuck can take drill bits up to 10mm. It is possible to clamp drill bits with larger shanks but not recommended. The auto-lock drill chuck allows you to use the drill as a normal screwdriver to make precise adjustments. It comes with a 10.8 volt 1.5Ah battery. If you drill only small holes or drive small/medium screws and bolts the battery may last for a day. But if you use it for heavy drilling the battery runs out of charge within minutes. It takes nearly 45 minutes to completely charge. The accessories supplied with the tool are of good quality. It contains pretty much all the bits the tool can handle. But the "100 piece accessory set" is just a marketing gimmick. It contains 12 drill bits (4 wood, 4 metal and 4 masonry), 10 common screw driver bits and a bit holder. The remaining 77 pieces are some wood screws and screw plugs. The impact drill mode for drilling masonry is the major selling point of this tool. Not many manufactures provide this feature on such a small drill. But it is not as useful as advertised. It may work on softer materials like brick and mortar. But on concrete and stone it is hopeless. Its hammering action is not strong enough to break concrete. With the larger 8mm masonry bit, it cannot even chip the surface of concrete. However, I have a workaround for this problem. I use triangle head glass drilling bits to drill holes on walls and concrete. For using glass drill bits you have to set the tool to non-impact drill mode. The drilling process is slow but it allows you to center the drill precisely and produces a neat round hole. The best part is, it produces very little noise, vibration and dust. If you are drilling hard materials like concrete then you have to pull the bit out of the hole occasionally and dip it in water. Otherwise the drill bit can become really hot and may damage the chuck. I have 4, 5, 6 and 8mm drill bits which is more than enough for most of the small works at home. It is expensive compared to regular masonry drill bits. But it will last long if you don't abuse it.Another drawback of the tool is the lack of battery status indicator. There is no way for us to know how much battery is left and the tool may run out of charge in the middle of your work. The lack of spare batteries make matters worse.Even though blue in color, Bosch has designed this tool for non-professionals. The lack of spare batteries, battery status indicator and the inclusion of the accessories starter kit indicates that. But it's user's manual servers no purpose to an average home user. It's purpose is to meet the product safety norms of different countries than actually helping the users. There is no explanation about the various modes of operation, when and where to use them, how to select the right gear, how to adjust the torque controller etc. This tool has a complex gearbox and clutch to control speed/torque. They are not really foolproof and needs some level of understanding. There are many Youtube tutorials on how to use a cordless drill driver. If you are a first time user, please watch them.Overall, it is a great tool for beginners and DIYers. I have seen people buying corded drills like GSB 13 RE or similar products for home repairs. For them GSB 1080-2-LI is a far better option. For professionals and advanced users GSB 10,8-2-LI makes more sense.

Convenient but not powerful
Bosch GSB 120 is a model with hammer mode ( for drilling into wall). It is quite convenient, but significantly underpowered compared to a corded drill which is a lot cheaper. This would serve for odd house jobs, but not for professionals as the name suggests. The screwdriver mode is not that useful as shown in the video, it definitely needs some pre drilling. Battery seems to last well. There is absolutely no indication of battery level, neither on the drill nor on the charger! How do we even know if the spare battery is low on charge?Overall useful but limited in power, and missing charge indictor.
