Okay, exept threads are lightweight. 4.5" from hinge to tip. Opens to 5".
They arrive in a little flexible plastic thing that is heavier than a bag, so my first thought was that I could store them in this flexible plastic, but it is hard to get them out. Well, so much for that idea. As I struggle to get them out of their bag, I notice they smell like diesel or kerosine. They really stink! They were very oily. If I had to guess, some mixture of oil & kerosine used in manufacturing. It does wipe off, but to get rid of the smell, it takes using some light oil into cracks & crevices to flush out of the kerosine. These are small. Each measuring roughly 4.5 inches from the center of the pivot, to the tips. The spring that pushes the jaws apart is quite strong. So much so that a person needs to manually push the jaws together before adjusting the screw. Other than the smell which can be removed, this is the big weakness of these calipers, the threads are so weak compared to the spring that, as long as a person pushes the jaws together & then adjusts the nut up to where it contacts the jaw, then they probably will last for quite a while. Trying to push the jaws together by screwing in the nut would very quickly destroy the threads.I like these. When working on something small, larger calipers are difficult to constantly fight with. These couldn't be much smaller before they would be too small to easily handle. Theoretically, they will each measure something out to 5", but by the time a person gets out much beyond 2" - 2.5" it gets far easier to switch to a larger pair of calipers.I haven't had them long, so I don't know if they will rust. The jaws appear to be plated stainless, but the plating was done over slightly pitted metal. They don't look bad, but I do question the durability of the finish. Even so, I expect them overall to be far more durable than some of the plastic trash that is for sale. Unlike some calipers, these have a strong enough spring so that they stay in place, once set. The threads are fine, not course threads like some useless calipers, so they can be set with some accuracy. If I were going to use small pairs of calipers for hours each day, I'd invest in more expensive ones, but these will probably meet my needs for a fair number of years. They are not built so tough that I expect them to last forever, but they are far better than I expected they might be, considering they are selling for $7.
