Premam is all about romance and fun, though there is more to it. The life of a person going through various phases is the premise of the story. Infatuation, romance, first love, pain of separation all those emotions that we all come across in our lives are discussed in an interesting way.

A TRUE CLASSIC
All right folks, first things first, this is not a review of the DVD’s quality per se but is more of a spoiler alert for the movie. Why is unrequired love the bane of most ballads, is there beauty in its endearing pain which draws us to it, why do many love stories do not have a happy ending. We may never know the exact reason but we do know that “har kisi ko nahin milta yahan pyaar zindagi mein”Premam is the story of George David ably played by Nivin Pauly, his childhood crush is a local girl (Anupama Parameswaran) to whom he is not able to convey his feelings (except follow her every day to school with his pals Shabareesh Varma and Krishna Shankar). She has numerous suitors and ends by getting engaged to some other guy.Nivin and his pals are now grown up rowdies and study at the local college. They bash up a group of students of opposing camp and end up ragging their new joinee teacher Malar (Sai Pallavi) by mistake. They are caught drinking in class and promptly expelled from classroom. So far so good.Nivin falls in love with Sai Pallavi from the first glance itself though she happens to be his teacher. Their friendship blossoms. Full marks to the storywriters and director for not overplaying their affair. Though I believe that part of the song Malare Ninne may be a dream sequence it is never explicitly indicated whether Sai Pallavi loves him or considers him to be only a good friend. Probably she could see the love in his eyes but didn’t want to fully reciprocate or make the first move. The comic relief is provided by the college teacher Vimal Sir who also takes a liking to Malar. The incident of choreographer Dolly D’Cruz is pretty hilarious. Before we can expect a happy ending the proverbial hand of fate strikes and Malar loses her memory after an accident. Her cousin Arivazhagan (Ananth Nag) marries her.And if you have any doubts about director Alphonse Putheran’s capabilities then go and simply watch the scene when Sai Pallavi couldn’t recognize Nivin post her accident, the long-drawn camera shot when he exits her house in despair with his heart broken, the grief slowly building on his face, the legs slowly giving away and finally he can’t take it anymore, you can’t cry in front of strangers but you can definitely weep in company of friends with their arms and shoulders to support. The haunting background music and scenes shot in reverse, all his hopes and dreams of love shattered beyond repair. If there is brilliance in direction and acting then this is THE scene which best depicts it. Hats off to Nivin and Alphonse.Another 10 years and George (Nivin) is now the owner of a cake shop, he ends up marrying the younger sister Celine (Madonna Sebastian) of his childhood crush Anupama after bashing up her ex-fiance (played by the director himself). The point here is that he marries Celine on the rebound but I felt that somewhere deep down his heart still beats for Malar. The songs Malare Ninne and Chinna Chinna are simply beautiful. Nivin Pauly is an amazing actor and ably slips into the role of a school boy, college student and a mature adult with equal ease. The amazing chemistry between him and Sai Pallavi is seen to be believed. Oh, if only they could have been together, but as I mentioned at the beginning, all love stories do not happy a happy ending “har kisi ko nahin milta yahan pyaar zindagi mein”. Premam is a true classic and mark my words, it will be a cult classic someday. That, in short, is Premam for you folks!!!P.S - I would like to add here that I do not understand a word of Malayalam except the ones which are basically Sanskrit words.

maatha, pitha, guru, daivam!!
nivin pauly in yet another classic, a simple love story spanning the boyhood to adultlife of the male lead, which once again tugs at the heart strings of all who watch.. either thru familiarity or thru its relatable nature. the three women in his life play meaningful and important roles, and spawns the discussion between all those who enjoyed this movie as to who their fevorite was.. but whover you chose, be it mary, malar or celine, you cant deny that george david is the king of the scene!! nah, the entire reel!! :)enjoy this must have for your home collection!

Good one time watch. See it for Nivin's performance.
First of all I was amazed to see Amazon offering such a good collection of Regional Movies. I ordered one day and next day the package arrives. The DVD was decently packed and delivered. Now about the movie ...The story line of this movie is similar to the Tamil hit movie Autograph. However, in this movie the ending is very mundane and almost expected. The film Autograph has a very good climax towards the end. What stands out in Premam is the performances of the cast. Nivin is absolutely brilliant. Rest of the character actors also perform well. The crisp editing and the photography style is really good. One thing I like about Malayalam movies is that technically they are brilliant. They also experiment a lot unlike Hindi movies.

Good for a one time watch
Maybe i expected too much. The movie is good for a one time watch but I don't know what is there to make so much hype about this. The DVD was of good quality. Four stars for that.
