Exposing the Hidden Dangers of Iron: What Every Medical Professional Should Know about the Impact of Iron on the Disease Process

A seemingly esoteric subject explained well.
This book is written for medical professionals, but it is understandable if you take your time and have a good medical dictionary with you. The subject is way to important for people concerned with their health, not to have a handle on. This is a huge risk factor for coronary events, and quite likely, more decisive as a predictive factor than cholesterol. There are ways discussed that would help you monitor your risk and improve your profile. Highly recommended for those motivated enough to want to know.

Excellent for those with iron overload diseases
An excellent choice for anyone with hemochromatois or other iron overload diseases. Although written for the medical profession (and I did need to Google some of the words as it get pretty technical) you can easily obtain a better understanding of this dreadful disease. I believe it is a must have book.

Pretty good overall but some missed dietary/prevention opportunities
Overall a pretty good overview of iron dangers and science. Some sections for example regarding hepcidin need updating, for example a more recent study by T. Ganz has a more specific graph of how much hepcidin is made in various HH mutations. It also kinda misses the point that hepcidin is kind of the gatekeeper of non heme iron absorption, but has no or little effect on heme absorption. This strongly suggests a vegetarian/vegan diet is ideal. As a homozygous c282y male, that is my experience too as I have not needed phlebotomy in over 1.5 years of eating a zero heme iron diet and my ferritin has actually dropped double digits sometimes between tests. It is nearly impossible to consume too much iron if a diet is whole food plant based. Moreover, I would suggest another dietary strategy of recommending that people with iron loading problems simply track how much iron they are eating for a week or two to get a baseline consumption level This can be done fairly easily with various apps (and just learning iron contents of various foods), and with a sufficient amount of accuracy. I did this when I first found out about my HH genes and was having many symptoms...it turned out I was often eating 3-4x the RDA of iron, sometimes in a single meal of popular breakfast cereals like Cheerios or Grape Nuts. Unsurprisingly my symptoms went away when I stuck to eating near the RDA. So I think the book is really missing an opportunity to talk about this diet stuff, and the dietary flyer at the back of the book should be updated. It's also worth noting the RDA can be confusing because menstruating women need about 2x the iron of everyone else, and the % on food labels is set for the women's RDA. So for example a box of Grape Nuts needs to have the RDA % doubled for people that are not menstruating females.

Hemachromatosis
BJ Burrows Very informative. I did not realize how many symptoms are associated with hemachromatosis. Now I understand why it is so hard to diagnos. I only went to 4 doctors whereas the average is 11 doctors.
