Basic German (Practice Makes Perfect) (German and English Edition)

This is a great addition to the other Practice makes perfect German workbooks. This workbook is easy to use, has answers listed in the back if you get stuck and guides you here and there. As with any of these workbooks, I would recommend buying a good German grammar book and a German dictionary. Together, the three books will help you understand the language and how to use it. These are good workbooks and study guides.

Initially this workbook was more advanced than I needed for beginner's practice. However, with some studying from other books like German Made Simple: Learn to speak and understand German quickly and easily and The Everything Learning German Book: Speak, write, and understand basic German in no time (Everything Series) I was able to catch up. Its a great workbook for someone teaching themselves German as well as an accompianment to a regular German class. I just wish it had a few more exercises per topic.

I like this series but this book is definitely very basic. I was hoping for better explanations and more exercises. It was very basic and I was looking to learn the language. I didn't feel it was as in-depth as I had hoped it would be. It is a good book for review if you already know the language or as a very basic refresher.

THIS IS A GOOD REVIEW OF BASIC GERMAN PRESENTED IN A SIMPLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD FORMAT THAT ALLOWS THE READER TO CONVIENIENTLY PICK UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF WITH THE LAST LESSON. EVEN ADVANCED STUDENTS WILL APPRECIATE DISCOVERING WORDS,GRAMMER, AND IDIOMS THEY SEEMINGLY MISSED BEFORE IN THEIR STUDY OF GERMAN. TO COMPLEMENT THIS BOOK, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE ENTIRE PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT SERIES. I CYCLE THROUGH THEM ALL AND THEN START OVER AGAIN. REMEMBER, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT !

If it was bad I wouldn't know because I don't speak German...But it comes with an app, so....

I'm finding this very helpful as an aid along with a popular online course that is immersion based. As a former language teacher, I believe the immersion method is the best for learning a language, but adults who are familiar with the grammar of their own language will be helped by a guide with practice exercises like this one. I also have the French book, which I purchased a few years ago.

Daughter loved it to prevent vacation brain drain in subject matter.

These exercises might be fine for those who already know a little German, but I was a little lost and frustrated. Would not recommend for beginners.

I bought this book as I previously enjoyed tremendeously the Spanish and Italian versions. I also used the French ones as a base to my grammar orientated lessons when I was teaching French from Year 9 to A levels in the UK. Let me clarify I love the whole concept of Practise makes it perfect, as a French native speaker I am used to heavy grammar content lessons but I did have difficulties to get a grasp to get it under my belt while studying a foreign language. I love the concept because the quantity of exercises allows you to finally absorb the grammar bet by bet at least for all the languages cited above especially for the Spanish ones. I am French but even so, I do have a hard time with the subjonctive tense, I finally manage to master it after practise makes it perfect. I was hoping the same results with the German book but I found it a bet deceiving mainly by the lack of translation German/English as it was the case in the other books which makes you loosing time to search in a dictionary or even online. Don' t take me wrong I do know the usefulness of searching and looking for the meaning of a word but when you' re focusing on grammar it is already a tough business! I was also a bet desapointed by the shortness of the exercises and there is not enough of them. If you base on the concept of practice makes it perfect, than practising allows to install / to absorb the target language grammar mechanisms in your linguistic memory, so you won' t have to torture yourself to retrieve the information and to reapply laboriously etc then you may be also desapointed. BUT if you grasp grammar easily with no or only little practise it should be just enough for you. In summary, grammar explanations are ok a basis and exercises are fine as long as you expect to get a regular German grammar books but if you are familiar with other books of the same collections you may be a slightly desapointed.

This is a very good book for people starting out at German. It covers all the important basics, and contains many exercises throughout the book. There's no colour or diagrams in the book, but this doesn't matter as the content is fantastic. This is not the first book I have used in attempting to learn German, and using this book, I've understood concepts that other books left me confused about.

Great Book !

I am a self-taught student and I bought this book to strenghten the basis. In my opinion is a well-done book, with simple and fair examples that help understanding grammar and meets my needs. I rate 4 stars because I was expecting to find more exercises, while you have one or two of them for each section, depending on the topic. Lo trovo un libro ben fatto, con esempi semplici e chiari che consentono di capire bene la grammatica e, soprattutto, corrisponde a ciò che avevo in mente. Gli assegno 4 stelle perché, purtroppo, per ogni argomento trattato ci sono solo 1-2 esercizi e mi sarebbe piaciuto trovarne di più.

Came quickly and as expected. Haven't had a chance to get into it yet, but looks like it will be a good help to learning the German language.
