Recorded at Eastern Artists Recordings in East Orange, New Jersey, during the band's visit to the USA the previous September, New Order's first ever single might, in an alternate universe, have been Joy Division's next. The 12-inch, originally released in March 1981 (the 7-inch having been released in January), includes the original version of 'Ceremony' and the B-side 'In a Lonely Place'.

The Last and The First
The last ever Joy Division songs, written most likely around late April 1980 (with original lyrics by Ian Curtis), ended up being the first New Order offering (originally as a 7" single January 1981).This is version 1 of these two songs, recorded in New York, September 1980, at which point they were still an interim 3-piece of Hook/Morris/Sumner. They were still undecided whether to continue as such or recruit a fourth member. Ultimately, Gillian Gilbert would join their ranks a few weeks later. This version of Ceremony is very close to how it would probably have sounded if Curtis had lived to see the recording. It's very "Joy Division" in sound, Hook's bass ringing out in a very plangent tone, almost acting as an entrance piece for the new band. Morris' drums, similarly, recall their previous incarnation in their feel, sound and rhythmic importance to the group. The song, and this version particularly, are a close relation to Love Will Tear Us Apart in spirit and feeling. They would re-record the track later in '81, as the four-piece, which is the version to be found on the blue & cream 12" cover. In A Lonely Place would also undergo a slight remix for that version, but this disc has the September 1980 mix on side 2.In truth, they are New Order in name only here. To all intents and purposes Joy Division was still unfinished business for the three of them as they attempted to resume their career after the shattering blow of Curtis' death in May.I have loved this record ever since I first heard it in January '81 (on Kid Jensen I think! although I can't be wholly sure on that one!!). One of the major highlights in a 45 year career which has had so many highlights. A truly great moment from one of the truly great British bands of the past 60 years.Recommended with bells on. For all lovers of British art-rock at its finest.

The beginning of a new Era, a transition from Joy Division to New Order and its iconic new sounds
Musically, "Ceremony" bridges the sonic landscapes of Joy Division's post-punk roots and New Order's emerging new wave sensibilities. The track is anchored by Peter Hook's distinctive bassline, Stephen Morris's dynamic drumming, and Sumner's evocative guitar work. The song's structure builds a compelling tension, culminating in a powerful crescendo that reflects both a farewell to the past and an embrace of new beginnings. The single was initially recorded without new member Gillian Gilbert and later re-recorded in September 1981 to include her contributions, adding depth to the band's evolving sound. This re-recorded version is often highlighted for its tighter performance and enhanced production quality.
