Penelope lives in the twentieth century, and it is only when she goes to live with her aunt at Thackers, a remote, ancient farmhouse, that she finds herself travelling back in time to join the lives of the Babington family, and watching helplessly as tragic events bring danger to her friends and the downfall of their heroine, Mary, Queen of Scots, whom they are seeking to rescue.

A gem from the past that stands the test of time
I saw this when it was first broadcast and thought I might be disappointed 40 (yes, 40) years on. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. The story is great and the acting is adept. Sometimes with 1970s series you feel as if you are watching the televisation of a play, not the case with this. The attention to period detail is sound and, for modern viewers now the late 1970s are a historical era of themselves, interesting to see in terms of technology and fashions. The story is brisk and engaging, with hazards and surprises, but credible. The time travel is handled well and still has the ability to jar you. In some ways the story comes over as more mature than much drama aimed at young people today. Perhaps viewers might feel that Penelope is rather earnest but she still seems believable. The star, though, is the late Elizabeth Bradley playing two very different characters in the two time periods. I watched all five episodes in one sitting and far from being disappointed, I was enthralled entirely anew and, of course, regretted that there was no sequel.

Good clean family entertainment from the 80's
Excellent children's TV programme staring a young Sophie Thompson in her first TV role. Fans of The Detectorist will know Sophie as Terry's wife Shirley. I was pleased to be able to find this on DVD. For ages I had been trying to find it on Google but to no avail, I couldn't remember the title, just that it was about Mary Queen of Scots and the girl going back in time and the chest at the top of the stairs. Thankfully my hubby managed to find it. It is nostalgic children's TV at its best. Good clean family entertainment like it used to be in the 70's and 80's along with programmes like The Moon Stallion, Child of the Stones, Children of Green Knowe etc.

Greensleeves
This was a blast from the past which reminded me why my young teenage self fell for the late Simon Gipps Kent back in the early ‘70s! I loved Alison Uttley’s magical book and this TV adaptation - filmed in the Babingtons’ actual home with all its Blue Peter connections - transported me right back to the 16th century. “Greensleeves” is such a hauntingly beautiful tune and now it is forever tied to Francis Babington. Let’s hope he and Penelope spend eternity together.

nice to see Mary Maude
This show was okay. I didn't love it and didn't expect to. I'm a middle-aged guy who never saw it when young, so I had no nostalgia for it. I bought it for one reason only -- it features Mary Maude.Mary Maude is my favorite obscure, English horror film actress. She shouldn't be obscure, but alas, she wasn't appreciated by the industry. She appeared the horror cult classic, The House That Screamed , the lesser known Crucible of Terror , and the barely known La Muerte Incierta. Apart from that, she had a bit part in the highly entertaining Terror .She also did some guest roles in mainstream TV shows, among them A Traveller in Time. I've long been searching for this show, having seen it among Ms. Maude's credits on the IMDB. Bit by bit, I'm tracking down all her works. So while I'm not the intended audience for this show, I'm glad to have finally seen it.Mary Maude fans (and she does have them, as seen by the fans who attend her convention appearances for The House That Screamed , will want to see this show.

Time travel tale
To be honest, I did purchase this based on my childhood memories of really enjoying the series at the time. It is very enjoyable, but alas the picture quality is pretty average comparing to today’s high standards, probably could do with someone working some picture improvement magic on it.The storyline is great, the acting is ok, a very young Sophie Thompson is very impressive. Worth a watch but possibly not one to keep going back to, sadly.

An unknown gem
I think a modern adaptation of this very interesting "time travel" story is absolutely necessary right now. But this is a very good fiction too, highly recomended.

Rediscovering my Childhood
I have waited for so many years for this to come out on DVD and, although it was not as good as the book it brought back many memories of a 1970's childhood watching this BBC series after school.Set in both the 20Th Century and Elizabethan England it tells the story of a young girl caught up in a plot to free the captive Queen of Scots from her English Prison in Derbyshire who is able to criss cross between the two eras. The drama was filmed in the same house where the characters lived in Elizabethan times, although only Wingfield Manor is open to the public on selected dates. If you like a good Children's historical drama with a little romance and no CGI then buy this DVD but read the book afterwards!
