Good game, fun for kids and good playability even for a 4-year-old
I have played both this version and the full version of Castle Panic. They have similar styles, but this game is very much simplified - which is appropriate for its target audience. I played two games with children ages 7 and 4 1/2. The older one had no issues with the game at all. The younger took a few minutes to pick it up, but by the end of the second game she knew the rules and the monster movements just by looking at the cards and didn't even really need an adult to guide her. While finer strategy was beyond her, she really enjoyed moving the monsters after each turn and easily identified which monsters she could defeat with her card(s). The first game, we lost - as expected, since we were all learning the rules and figuring out how it went. The second game, we took advantage of one of the "make it easier" optional rules, specifically that each player got two cards instead of only one to start. This gave us a much broader set of options and we were able to defeat the monsters at the end. If your kids are a little sensitive about losing, it's probably good to give them one of the easy rules; after they get a few losses under their belt you can go to the regular rules or even try the "hard" variants for a real challenge. Since the game is cooperative, it's important to stress the "ask for help" aspect of the game. Sometimes, the best move is to ask for help, even if you have an action. This also helps with the planning and long-term thinking, and while it'll be a few games before they really understand, I have no doubt they'll develop the skills quickly. Overall, very happy with the purchase and would recommend it as a "gateway" game for kids as young as 4. A word of warning - you'll want to supervise at least a little, because our previous "My First..." game has had a couple of pieces go missing, which definitely affects that game-play. Strongly suggest you audit the game components after play to ensure they all go back in the box.

Absolutely fantastic for the young ones - best version for you though?
This game was absolutely a hit with my kids, youngest being 3. I found it engaging as well. So much, that I wound up buying the standard Castle Panic and I love that the colors and shapes even carry over into the iconography for that version. Easy transition. This is great on its own and reasonably priced. Prepare to be hooked. I canโt say for sure if you should just skip this version and go big, because I know it worked out well for me starting here. If your kid is 5-7, maybe just skip this โfirstโ version. Also, if you plan to buy expansions and really open the gameplay up, youโll need the standard version as this game lives on its own, basic, but happy.

Family fun
My First Castle Panic is a fantastic introductory board game for young kids. Itโs easy to learn, quick to play, and encourages teamwork since everyone plays together to protect the castle. The colorful design and simple rules make it fun and engaging without overwhelming younger players. A great way to build basic strategy skills and cooperation at the same time.

Perfect Children's First Strategy Game
When asked for game recommendations for a children's game for kids aged 3-6, this is my recommendation. Cooperative game of matching symbols to remove goblin chips from the board. Teaches kids how to cooperate and light strategy. If your kid plays Candyland this is the absolute best next step. Card quality is lackluster but I think its ok for a children's game. My son loved that the box has art inside of a dungeon to put the goblin chips after you defeat them. It also has a nice game length for kids, we will sometimes play multiple games before putting it away. Easy to learn with super fast setup.

Great intro game
This is a great starter game that has gotten my kid into turn based games. The game makes her think and rely on playing as a team to help win. I even enjoy playing it. My kid is 5 and she loves playing it and knows and understands the rules already to it!

Great simple co-op board game
Excellent board game! Well loved by our four year old, and even our two year old can participate easily. The instructions are clear and simple, and we're using it to teach turn-taking, being a good 'loser' (since sometimes the monsters will win). My son absolutely loves it and wants to show it to all of his friends. Additionally, the game has a 'built-in' time mechanism -- once the monsters run out, the game ends, so it won't drag on (ideal for "let's play a quick game before bedtime"). Highly recommend it.

Excellent kid game
This is an excellent game! My family loves board games and every January we have a day where we open and play several new games. For my just turned 7 year old I got this and Dragon's Breath. We liked Dragon's Breath, but we played Castle Panic 5 times in a row! It was quite exciting. We did make a house rule - instead of the castle falling as soon as a monster reaches it, we instead remove one of the supports for the castle, which in turn puts that monster in the dungeon. Ultimately it means the castle falls when a second monster reaches it since there are only two supports but it buys a bit of time and made sense to us. I have to say, this kid version is much more fun than regular Castle Panic. Castle Panic is a good game we've owned for at least 10 years but my husband and I both find it to be very anxiety inducing! Honestly, we might pull this one out from time to time to play after the kids are in bed if we want a quick, non stressful game. One last thing, this says it's for ages 4 and over but my daughter is 3 1/2 and this game would definitely not be playable for her 6 months from now. I'd say this is more like ages 5 and up but my 7 year old loves it. I got Frankie's Food Truck Fiasco for my 3 year old and it's much more her level, as well as My First Orchard.

Didn't manage to play it
Not a reflection of the game. Rather, my experience and either the manufacturer's or Amazon's storage issue. Opened my brand-new, sealed box to find mold in it. There's just no way I'm touching it or placing it anywhere near my game library. Returned it immediately.

Great fun to play with your kids.
My 6 year old absolutely loves this game, and will gladly play it for hours on end. It's great as it teaches co-op mechanics in a way that is easy for a younger player to grasp, and is still entertaining enough for the resident adult(s).

5 to 7 years olds will love it
My kids, who are 5 and 7, absolutely love it. It is the right level of difficulty where we win basically every time but only by a little.

Wondefully simple game
I play with my two and four year olds. My two year old doesnt understand what he is doing but he is just happy to join in a Big Kids game. My four year old loves this game and loves throwing the defeating ogres into the dungeon i.e. "inside the box." I recommend card sleeves for the cards because they will get abused by the kids.
