Classic 80s rock
One night in 1989, I was listening to the local top 40 radio station, and they would do this weekly Battle of the New Hits. Listeners would call in and vote for their favorite new song that was played, and that song would go on to battle other new songs. I remember when they played Youth Gone Wild, and I LOVED it. I could hardly wait to hear it again and to get the cassette. Not long after that, I got the album on tape and I liked just about every song. My favorites were, and still are, of course, the classic trifecta of huge hits: Youth Gone Wild, 18 and Life, and I Remember You, and the track Here I Am. I also had a huge crush on Sebastian Back like most girls did at the time. This album is still pretty great...the big singles are still the stand-outs. Youth Gone Wild never gets old. I Remember You is one of the best hair metal power ballads ever. And who doesn't get nostalgic when they hear the guitar strings start, and the classic line, "Ricky was a young boy, he had a heart of stone". Each of the videos for those songs is a classic, too. Every rock fan needs this album in their collection. I think it deserves 5 stars.

One tasty slab of hot air
One of the most brilliantly numbskull heavy rock records ever to emerge from the 80's this debut album from Skid Row is a powerful mix of throwaway cliched sentiments and biting blasts of bile. This is a late 80's hair metal band but one you should buy into - as opposed to corporate dross like Tangier or Danger Danger. The reason? Actual fire in the belly. Actual grunt under the bonnet - a serious big block of pounding and reckless self belief. Going into specifics is beside the point. This is an album that should be taken in it's entirety and as such it represents a hell of a party. Motormouth frontman Bach is in fine fettle, his infectious personality and blazing set of pipes cutting a swathe through the solid rawk rock provided by the guys. Some critics did point out that much of this product was fairly, well, full of hot air. And that's tru to a certain extent. But compare this to stuff like Ratt, another dependable act of the time, or Warrant even? In relation to Ratt, this disc has huge 'X' factor that commands attention with it's great hooks and personality. Regarding the latter named hair band, well the full bodied attack and the full on assault and the psychologically haunting aspects of this album like the lyrics to 18 and Life means that posers like Warrant are blown away. This album scored five stars in Metal hammer upon it's release by then editor Chris Welch, who was nobodies fool. My honest advice is that while this is not a flawless record it is a fine, fine hard rock record with weight and delicious sneer. So pick it up - heck it's cheap enough so why not take the plunge!

Sounds Fantastic
Story Time. So a few months ago I bought this Ion Boombox Delux at Sam’s Club in OKC. Wanted it for the cassette player. Well a week ago I bought a couple of cassettes on Amazon. One of them was the debut album from SKID ROW. I open the boom box up to play the tape and you guessed it. The first song was Youth Gone Wild. So while listening to Skid Row and Sebastian Bach like I did in the 80’s I decided to look at the insert and look at the words. Well guess what? The dang thing has been autographed by the band. How cool is that?

This album is great from start to finish. It is a shame that Sebastian Bach is no longer the signer as he made the band. Do not get me wrong the band is really good and write great tunes but without Bach this band has not been the same and it is a fact. Skid Row should tour with Bach just for one tour and play this debut from start to finish with a encore of the other hits.... I would go see it, Get like one or two other bands from the era in music to do their best record from start to finish as well. I know it will not ever happen but a promoter should try and get it done.
