Chess for Kids: How to Play and Win

A most readable, concise, and fun introduction to the teaching of young children to play chess. The book is designed or at least is suitable for young children and is a great way to get them aware of the chess boards and the pieces. For the average young child it creates the game of chess as fun and not some dull intellectual game for adults. If they use it properly they will be able to play a game (and win as the title states) that will give them the ability (and hopefully interest) to further their game and become a reasonable good or even brilliant player. Many might not continue but at least they will have had the experiences of having fun with a chess set and play with a bit of insight. An excellent start for any child who show a slight or more interest in that fascinating game of wooden board and men. I highly recommend it for you young child (and it might even prove useful and interesting to many parents!)

I am planning to teach a group of approximately 12 male teens chess. This book and the Right Way to Teach Chess to Kids is ideal for this not so good chess player to do this. I like the well thought out lesson plans and work sheets. We will not have internet access so being able to down load the lesson plans and worksheets for offline use is wonderful.

I bought this for my 7 year-old who thoroughly enjoyed it. Her game is improving as a result of her reading and she has the game vocabulary down.

My son has read this book over and over (and over and over) since getting it for Hanukkah. He absolutely loves it...whatever magic the author used to make it so appealing to kids is very much appreciated!!!

Great Book! I discovered Richard James's great website 5 years or so ago. My 8 year old has been curled up with this at all times of the day for the last two weeks. She almost prefers reading this over playing chess, but she has been using the metaphors given in this book already during her games. This is hugely helpful. I've too been saying things like "let's prepare a firing squad for the opposing King!."

Very good chess start book. My 6 years old read it at least 6 times.

Oh Dear The author clearly knows how to move from the start to finish in teaching chess to children. But he does this by turning chess into a "violent sport" (his words) In the introduction the author writes "the course outlined in this book...is designed to use ...fantasy violence to grab children's interest." These children are seven yes seven years old. The talk between the seven year old twins Alice and Sam who are learning chess via his book indeed is violent. There is also negative talk about beating their Dad "who is "really stupid" (page 93) or page 122 where Alice tells her brother he needs a new head "the one you've got at the moment isn't much good" I could go on and on. There are so may other ways to teach Chess to children. I much prefer an app such as Dinosaur Chess. My seven year old grandson has learned as much as Alice and Sam It has the same sequence of lesson as this unfortunate book The Dinosaurs are aggressive and do use warlike words but they are used at an appropriate level of fantasy game aggression for kids.

I was expecting more of an kids-friendly guide to chess. This book tries to teach chess through storytelling that adds too much complexity for kids. They need to grasp the long story, the characters and then the actual chess plays.

It can be used by adults as well as kids. Tells you all the basic ways of getting checkmate and if you lose your queen it is curtains as they say and you might as well quit at that stage. The problem is that it takes each piece in isolation, and it is a lot different, when all the men and pawns are present on a 8 by 8 board. Great way to understand Nash game mathematics.

Det första jag lade märke till att boken är så hårt klistrad att det är mycket svårt att bläddra i den. Den går inte att lägga platt på ett bord utan man måste hålla den i händerna om man vill läsa i den. Författaren försöker sedan förmedla kunskaper om hur man spelar schack baserat på en berättelse som är otroligt långrandig. Här och var finns det några poänger, men det finns klart bättre böcker för den tilltänkta målgruppen.
