From award-winning documentary filmmaker E. Chai Vasarhelyi and world-renowned photographer and mountaineer Jimmy Chin, the directors of Meru, comes Free Solo a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world s most famous rock...the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park...without a rope. Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold s climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge places his story in the annals of human achievement. Free Solo is an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who challenges both his body and his beliefs on a quest to triumph over the impossible, revealing the personal toll of excellence. As the climber begins his training, the armor of invincibility he s built up over decades unexpectedly breaks apart when Honnold begins to fall in love, threatening his focus and giving way to injury and setbacks. Vasarhelyi and Chin succeed in beautifully capturing deeply human moments with Honnold as well as the death-defying climb with exquisite artistry and masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork. The result is a triumph of the human spirit that represents what The New York Times calls "a miraculous opportunity for the rest of us to experience the human sublime." Review: Worth multiple viewings... - This is great.. I rented it and watched it 3 times before my time was up. Honnold is so humble to be that skilled and not conceited in the slightest. Easy to see why this documentary won so many awards it's well put together. If your just thinking about watching go ahead and do so, you won't be disappointed. Review: Gravity - ‘Look what you have overcome to get here Look at the distance you've run The doubts that you’ve pushed down Fear that you've drowned out When they said that it couldn't be done’ Gravity by Tim McGraw What do you do when you are the first and only Free Solo climber of El Capitan in Yosemite ? Who knows but we do know Alex Honnold has trained relentlessly to conquer this 3000 foot piece of rock. If you have not seen El Capitan, try to see it, a magnificent feat for a climber, none the less one without any ropes or any safety precautions. He had his feet and hands and his intelligence. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin are the filmmakers of this documentary. Jimmy Chin has been with Alex for ten years. He has filmed and photographed Alex 1,000 times on his solo climbs. Alex is a child of a father who had Aspergers and never had a hug, nor was he told he was loved. His mother is alive and well, why she did not hug is a mystery. Thus Alex found his life centered around climbing, extreme climbing. He had his brain imaged with an MRI which showed he needs much more stimulation to show excitement or emotion. And, then Sanni, a lovely young woman comes into his life, and he does find love. However, climbing free solo is his first love and El Capitan is to be conquered. As we climb with Alex it is an unbelievable sensation, and I had to look away several times. But, it is an enormous relief to see him summit. He summited in 3hours and some odd minutes, what a relief and feeling of joy. And, to top it all this documentary won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Wonderful, wonderful! Highly Recommended. prisrob 03-03-19

Good movie on free climbing El Capitan
This was a movie about a guy named alex honnold who climbed el capitan in yosemite national park without using ropes. It runs a little like a documentary. I enjoyed watching it. It goes over how much he prepared to do it. It's good if you like that kind of movie.

Extremely impressive.
I don’t watch many movies these days, or tv for that matter. This was a pleasant show to watch. What this film shows is absolutely unbelievable. I love hiking and being outdoors. I use trails to get to the top of mountains. I’m to lazy to to use my hands for hardcore rock climbing. Having spent a good amount of time in the Sierra(singular for all of you international grammar aficionados) and Yosemite makes me appreciate this accomplishment even more. I would have to say that Alex Honnold is one of the few people who has truly earned the price of admission for this show.

Beautiful. And hard to a watch.
My five stars is likely due to the fact that I went into this knowing what to expect, after reading the reviews here. I loved it, actually. I did not think I would, but the reviews, particularly the negative ones, actually intrigued me more. I’ve always been interested in Alex Honnold. It’s the same as my fascination with the late Dean Potter. These two have some similarities, beyond their daredevil climbing, for sure. What drew me to wanting to watch this film was an interest more in the psychology and especially his relationship with Sanni amidst his lifestyle. From my perspective I think that, though I initially felt annoyed and slightly suspicious of Sanni, I actually realized through watching this that, regardless of either of these two humans personal flaws, they are actually in love with one another. The love is true. What can anyone do to change that? And being one who does believe that the heart has its own wisdom, I think they are meant to be a part of one another’s lives. Whether it’s for the rest of their lives (short or long) I couldn’t say. But they are attracted to each other for a reason. Especially on a psychological level. And... they are so young. Young, and learning. So I forgive Sanni for being a somewhat (in many ways) typical girl in her 20s. I felt tenderness for her, especially in light of the often harsh and negative comments I’ve been reading here about her. She’s just a human trying to figure out life, and she goes after what she wants. Too many don’t. I applaud her for that. As far as Alex... I see him as an immensely unique individual who has his own psychological traumas from childhood centering around perfectionism and not feeling good enough. So these climbs, though obviously a true passion for him, are also fueled by this psychological trauma of needing to be perfect... in fact... needing to be absolutely superb. The best of the best. In a way, it’s like he is the realized subject of what Dean Potter called himself: An Artist. PS. I found that monumental climb at the end absolutely intolerable to sit through. I had to shield my eyes through much of it. Even knowing, obviously, that he doesn’t fall, and even watching it a second time. I simply could not bare it.

It’s a documentary really but don’t let that put you off, this is mind blowing. I don’t climb. Did it a few times at an indoor climbing wall and at least got a teeny bit of appreciation how much strength is required but what this guy does is literally from another planet and if you think about it you really get scared for his prospects of survival. But the thing is. The whole movie is obviously moving towards this big climb finale but before that he seems to casually do a whole bunch of solo climbing that seems quite ludicrous enough thanks very much. So when you come to the final thing you’re thinking ok so this can’t be that much scarier, but you’re wrong. It’s almost like he’s casually mocking our entire existence with every needle eye-threading minuscule finger pinch hold of the rock thousands of feet above death. That fact that some of the greatest mountain climbers that have ever lived are scared witless thinking about and then witnessing what he’s doing drives it come. Despite what others have said I didn’t find his girlfriends presence in the movie intolerable. With that said I have to say she comes across as rather manipulative and a potential huge distraction to Alex to the point you think she’s going to cause him to fall to his death. But maybe for the move that’s okay. Anyway. This guy is incredible. What he does is incredible(insane). And this movie as a high resolution chronicle of what this guy does for fun is something no one should miss. .

The entire documentary is constructed around Alex Honnold's lifelong obsession to climb El Capitan without the aid of ropes or climbing equipment. We see the tension build as director, Jimmy Chin, and his superb team record Alex's failed "dry runs" with the use of safety gear. He is somewhat distracted by the camera team's intrusive surveillance of his earlier climbs, and we are never sure he can pull it off. He abandons one attempt and is injured during another. But Alex has a rendezvous with destiny. As one of his colleagues put it: "It is like reaching for Olympic gold, and if you loose, you die"
