Received yesterday (5/16/12) and immediately put this extension to use. I was under the assumption that the female end of the extension would have a Hex shape. It does not. The female side is round. The female end of the extension uses two set screws to keep bits from spinning or disconnecting. At first I was disappointed as the Daredevil bit spun inside the extension as soon as I started drilling the 1st of many holes. I tightened the set screws to the point where I felt any more torque would risk stripping the hex in the set screw. That solved the slipping problem. The Daredevil spade bits I purchased have a male hex and a groove machined into the hex. This allows one set screw in the extension to hit a flat spot on the bit to prevent it from rotating inside the extension. The other set screw threads into the groove cut in the bit to prevent it from pulling apart. These set screws must be VERY tight! This locking groove was especially helpful yesterday as I was drilling through 2 railroad ties (stacked as landscape borders) and the bit required frequent removal to clear the hole. I was worried that the bit would come apart from the extension (and become forever stuck in the wood) but it never did. I was very impressed that it all held together.If the extension had a Hex shaped female end (instead of round) I'd give this product a solid 5 stars. The round shape makes it slightly more universal but I would prefer the Hex shape for the more positive engagement versus relying on one small set screw which I am confident will eventually be the death of this tool.

This was awesome and I tested the hell out of it... I used forstner bits to bore into maple trees and fir beams, probably 15" per hole and maybe 24 holes I used curtain rod as dowels to secure my treehouse to its foundation 20' in the air in a maple cluster I benched off high.One little trick you might not think to try, I modified one of my round drill bit tails with a small dimple to grab the set screw so that I would not lose it deep in a hole and it would bite better.An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I don't always need a 4-5 foot spade bit for a project. This extension works well to add just a little extra length to get through thicker walls. It works well, but you need to make sure you tighten it enough, or you might lose your bit.

Design and construction good but the shaft is not straight. There's a very obvious wobble during operation. Would buy again if I could be sure the next one would be better in this respect.

Name brand, high quality, its universal fits 1/4 shank.
