Worth the money!
I purchased this printer over 6 years ago to replace another inferior brand which was problematic. It is not used in an industrial setting, but I made the significant price difference purchase to eliminate frustration with erratic printing and feeding with my former label printer. This is a wonderful printer with LOTS of options too numerous to list individually. My only disappointment is that it will not work with single-use lithium AA batteries which never leak, and which I use in just about everything else. The lithium single-use batteries deliver a higher voltage, about 1.7-1.8V, more than the 1.5V alkaline batteries recommended in the user manual. There must be protective circuitry in this printer to provide over-voltage protection, because with single-use lithium AA batteries, the screen remains blank and it won't power on.. I don't want to chance alkaline batteries leaking and destroying my beautiful printer, so I don't leave them installed when I don't intend to use it for a while. I am very satisfied with this great label printer!

This is *the* standard for handheld label makers
It's so refreshing to buy a product that actually meets and then exceeds your expectations and this label maker certainly qualifies. Operation of this product is very intuitive and is feature rich, so many features that you might have to refer to the manual to take full advantage of its capabilities. For simple labels, load a label cassette, pick your font size, input your text and print. Mechanically it's very robust, the rubber bumper does a good job of shock reduction. The screen is plenty large and easy to read and its memory will be retained when you turn it off (hooray - my last label maker had no permanent memory.) The labels themselves are very high quality and there is a label for any application you might have. When it's time to cut a label, the manual (built-in) cutter is very easy to operate and fully cuts the label. Another pleasant surprise is battery life, I've printed an entire 16' cassette of labels (and a few others) and the battery still shows to be full. Cons: Honestly I can't think of any.

Observe this unorthodox polarity and you're good to go
The basis for 5 Star is the BMP21 is light years ahead of other popular brand printers in terms of capability and quality. There's no need for concern about the labels, they are much more durable and sticker than their competitors' labels and sufficient for wiring and flat surfaces. The printrer's firmware takes care of the mode (wire, flat surface, breaker box labels, etc). The White on Blue, White on Black, and White on Red labels are particularly attractive. The optional AC adapter gets less than 5 stars due to high price. If you don't happen to have a 4 amp (or more) 9 volt DC output adapter, get one from another source and build a crossover cable (or buy one with a crossover cable) because (as another buyer pointed out) the center pin is negative. Observe this unorthodox polarity and you're good to go. There's a vendor on the website that begins with the letter "e" that provides the proper 9volt 4 amp adapter with crossover cable, for half of what Brady charges, and it works perfectly.

Get It! You'll Be Glad You Did!
I totally love my purchase! It is strong, sturdy and was much larger than I expected......that's a good thing! The screen is a very nice size as well. The owner's manual made it very easy to understand how to navigate through the menu and use the unit. I printed my 1st label in just a few minutes after unpacking. Key things that I like: a) You can create and store files for future printing b) You can print vertically as well as horizontally c) There are several label type options (Banner Landscape, Wire Maker, Patch Panel, etc.) d) Font size (standard and bold) e) You can place text in barcode format f) You have the option to use 6 AA batteries or an rechargeable battery (none are included) This particular model doesn't have the kickstand on it nor does it have the magnet on the back.....there's a small hole on the back of it for something to be screwed on, I guess it's for the optional magnet. All-In-All this is a great printer for the field. I hope to use it for years to come!

It's alright. Doesn't use a batteries full capacity.
When I first bought this, I had the intention to use decent NiMH rechargeable batteries. As shown, it took 6 of them all in series, which wasn't a problem. Used it a for awhile and realized the batteries didn't seem to last all that long. This was beside the fact that the "battery indicator" on the unit only had 2 segments to show the state of charge. So I looked into it further. I hooked the unit up to a programmable power supply and came up with the following: Battery state: < ~7.1V battery showed empty 7.1V - 7.6V showed almost empty > 7.6V showed battery is full Power consumption: On (no backlight) - ~8.8mA On (with backlight) - ~24mA Printing - ~380mA to 400mA Off - ~35uA So knowing that at about 1.2V per NiMH battery was about 50% left of charge, and with all 6 batteries in series this equals about 7.2V. Once the unit goes below 7.0V, it won't turn back on. The back light will flicker once when you hit the power button and that's all you get. This may be the way it done to help protect their lithium ion battery from getting too low. Either way, thought I would point it out. Besides that, here are some Pros and Cons for the unit: Pros: * Reliable printing. I have run a few tapes through and haven't had an issue with one yet. * The back light is nice and bright. Can see everything just fine in daylight as well. * Different printing types. You can choose from landscape, portrait, wire wrap, patch panel, fuse panel, as well as a few others. * Feels nice and solid. For the price, you definitely feel like you got a good bit of kit * Easy to cut the labels with either your left or right hand. Might be small, but some other units only have the cutter buttons on one side. With this, you don't have to shuffle the unit around just to cut. May be small, but I found it a nice feature to have. * The cartridge mechanism is very nice. It's easy to pop out the old cartridge, and throw in a new one. Cons: * The price of cartridges is expensive. * Some label modes have excessive white space at the edges, even when you try to specify very little to no white space. * Max label size is .75". Big enough for anything I need, but worth pointing out. * The battery life with NiMH. They should think about having a menu selection or something that would switch between battery types that are being used, so you could get more life out of them. * Can only print 4 lines. On some label types, there is a ton of white space left after the 4th line which is just unused real estate now. * Lithium ion battery and charger are sold separate and also expensive. On top of that, you have to remove the lithium ion battery from the unit to charge it. Not sure how that is practical, but that's how they say it must be done. * Very very slight drain on the batteries when the unit is off. At 30uA current draw when off, worst case, you could maybe expect 1mAh drained from the battery a day. With a decent NiMH battery having 1800mAh, it should take it awhile to get all batteries in series down to the 7.0V mark. This is of course ignoring batteries that tend to self discharge quicker than others.

Wonderful tool!
Just Wow. After using the normal brands from the office supply stores, I new I needed something better for labeling Cat5 Ethernet, HDMI cables, and other stuff. I wanted something that would do the self-laminating labels. This does a good job with those. BUT, it does a Fantastic job with the configuration where it just prints sideways on the normal labels with enough copies to go around the wire. I'll probably use that for all my personal stuff and just use the self-laminating ones for professional work. I really like that I can print the labels I need with 2 copies of each number and have it auto increment serial numbers. This way I can easily print twenty labels numbered C0001-C0010 with two copies each and then put one cable on each end of each Ethernet cable. Make sense? :) I should've broke down and bought this earlier! Oh!!! One more thing: The manual is a joke. Be prepared to spend some time (and a foot or so of labels) trying out the various options. You've gotta tinker with it to get the best out of it. I just had some fun while watching TV and quickly figured out what I needed.

Easy to use and labels stay on
I have tried many label makers over the years: Brother, Epson, Dymo - my favorite was Epson for a long time because the one I had was easy to use, the batteries lasted and there were plenty of tape types from which to choose. However, I could never find a type of label tape that would stay on cables. Eventually they all fell off from either heat (connected in a rack, often plugged into connectors positioned behind the exhaust fan of gear), bending or friction. I decided to go with Brady since it seems this label maker is used in many industrial applications like electrical panel labeling and IT data centers. I was especially interested in the self-laminating labels. Well, they didn't disappoint! I have used this for about two months now and not a single label has fallen off, even after winding up the cables and relocating to a different studio. I saw some comments that the AA batteries don't last long in this label maker - that may be true if you leave it on for long periods of time but I generally label a few cables, turn it off and run/connect them then turn it back on again when I am ready to make the next labels. Doing this, I have been using the same batteries for a couple months without having to change them. My ONLY gripe with the unit is that after it sits for a while the first label printed will have a thin black line at the head of it - maybe where the tensioner or cutter was sitting on the tape in storage. It's nothing that would prevent me from using or recommending the label maker, though. The first cartridge I received ended up with a broken ink layer so the labels were being advanced out of the machine but nothing was printed on them. I contacted Brady and they mailed me a replacement free of charge. Good customer service, quality build and labels that stay on.

The finest labeler for professional use
While DYMO and Brother label printers are the norm for the average home user, they don't quite make the cut for more professional needs. Brady, however, does fill that niche quite well. They offer all of the types of label material which would be needed to attain professional results for tasks such as wire marking, caution/warning labels, pipe identification, etc. The software inside the label printer is also very much adequate for the previously named tasks. They have even made it rather simple to print labels, perfectly spaced, for use in circuit panels, patch panels, etc. This model label printer is my favorite, as it has a nice armor coating around it to protect from bruises, bumps, falls, etc. The display is high quality, easy to read, and the cutter doesn't have any issue with gumming, even after MANY repetitive cuts.
